Van Dyke is no longer a Cane commitment after the firing of Coker. He said he will choose between Florida and Ohio State on 12/1 and he may consider Miami again after they hire a new coach.

Choice of new coach may sway recruits

The news that Larry Coker had been fired as Miami's head coach hit Glades Central running back Damien Berry hard. But it didn't come as a surprise or change his opinion of the program he says he is still committed to.
"It was hard to see him go because he was a great guy, but we've got to move on," said Berry, whose father, Kenny, played for the Hurricanes.
While Berry says he'll visit LSU, Florida and UCLA just to make sure he's making the right decision, he has a message for other recruits considering the Hurricanes.
"If you know in your heart you really want to be a Hurricane, then you'll get down there," said Berry, who has rushed for 1,056 yards and scored 18 touchdowns this season but plans to be a defensive back in college.
"Miami's rebuilding right now, and it's going to take them about two to three years to rebuild back into a powerhouse," he continued. "When you're rebuilding there are a lot of open spots for young, hungry guys like myself to come in and make an impact."
UM will have between 16 and 20 scholarships to offer, depending on how many underclassmen enter the draft (tight end Greg Olsen and linebacker Jon Beason are considering it) or transfer.
Larry Blustein, who has covered Florida recruiting since 1971 and writes for Varsity Sports Media, says the administration's ability to make a quick hire will determine how strong the 2007 recruiting class is.
"If it's done in enough time, before the recruits have a chance to make a decision, it's usually manageable," Blustein said. "But if they wait too long and these recruits don't know who it's going to be for a long time, other programs have time to make up some ground and it could be trouble."
Blustein thinks Jan. 1 is a realistic cutoff date for Miami to have someone in place because it gives the new coach "one solid month" to put together a class.
Depending on whom UM hires, Blustein says UM could actually improve on the class by attracting some players who weren't previously considering Miami because of Coker's uncertain future.
One of the players he thinks could be swayed is Ocala Trinity Catholic quarterback John Brantley, who previously committed to Texas, but might be reconsidering because of the Longhorns' logjam at the position. UM's only quarterback commitment is Texas' Nick Fanuzzi, and he hasn't commented since Coker's firing.
Only two of Miami's 10 fall commitments have strayed so far, and one, tailback LeSean McCoy, was out long before Coker was fired. Pace athlete Demarcus VanDyke decommitted the same day Coker was fired and plans to choose either Ohio State or Florida.
McCoy spent this season playing behind Graig Cooper at Milford Academy in New York. UM signed Cooper to last year's recruiting class, but he lacked the necessary test score to enroll. Cooper told Canesport.com Coker's firing encouraged him to take all his visits instead of enrolling at UM this January.
Junior college receiver Kayne Farquharson, who grew up in Miami, says he's coming to UM no matter what. Farquharson, who compiled over 1,300 yards receiving at El Camino (Calif.) Junior, is expected to enroll in January.
UM's other commitments say they are still planning to become Hurricanes, but, like Berry, they all plan to use their four other visits to explore other schools in case they don't like UM's hire, or vice versa.
And UM's assistants are still on the trail of other top prospects, like St. Thomas safety Major Wright and Glades Central receiver Deonte Thompson.
"It's still the University of Miami. Still a great program to go to," said Hialeah-Miami Lakes defensive end Adewale Ojomo, who is rated by Rivals.com as the 60th-best prospect in Florida and has UM on his short list with a visit scheduled for early December.
