Willingham leaning toward redshirt freshman Locker at QB

The long-awaited collegiate debut of heralded home-state quarterback Jake Locker will likely come in Washington 's season opener Aug. 31 at Syracuse.
Tyrone Willingham came as close as a coach can in April to naming the teenage redshirt freshman as the replacement for graduated passer-runner Isaiah Stanback.

"If we had to play a game today, Jake Locker would be our quarterback," Willingham said Thursday, four days before the coach begins his third and most promising set of spring practices at Washington.

That promise chiefly comes from Locker, who turns 19 in June.

I think none.

RS Freshman = sophomore

Locker is actually a sophomore. I think we'll win, but it could be close; since, the game is at Washington and we will be starting a "new" quarterback this year too.

The "key to the game" (besides who scores the most points usually wins) could be which quarterback makes the fewest mistakes (turnovers, bad decisions, and not recognizing the blitz, etc.).

We have the D to handle this as long as we work hard and don't get overconfident.

It has been proven time and again that a QB doesn't have to win a game for you, but manage it effectively. Tressel has done this succesfully with QB's as have other coaches. If Washington has a solid plan and they execute it who is at QB won't necessarily matter.

I wouldn't underestimate the signifigance of playing a road game on the west coast with a first year starter at QB for us.

UW is young and appearently not that talented but I say forget who we are playing and look at the situation. We need to prepare like we're going to play USC.

I would think we prepare for every game like we were going to play tsun. There just isn't any other way to do it in my mind.

I'm flying over for this game. Never been to Seattle and really looking forward to the three days I'll be there leading up to the game...I'll of course be wearing OSU garb the entire time.

We should win by 10-17. Boeckman is a grey-shirt junior and has a few games of experience (albeit mop-up). Despite the loss of Ginn and Gonzo our WRs will be more than enough for UW to handle, and a healthy (and non-fumbling) Beanie will keep them honest. Our defense should be more than up to the task of holding a RS-frosh in check...if we could shut down Colt McCoy at Texas, we should be able to lock down Locker (pun intended).

Congrats on getting to go to the game. Hopefully you will fare better than my last to visits to enemy territory.

As far as Beanie goes. I feel pretty confident with both how he ended the season, and a full off-season to work on his problem, fumbling won't be an issue.

Coach speak: The secondary, and more

Here's the rest of our conversation with UW defensive coordinator Kent Baer, where he discusses the secondary and the team's defensive philosophy:
QUESTION: Talk a little bit about the secondary, the play there last season and who is coming back for this season.
BAER: Losing those guys (Dashon Goldson, C.J. Wallace) who are going to play on Sundays is going to hurt, though when you really look at it, in a way we only lost one because Dashon wasn't really healthy all season. But when he was healthy, he was pretty good. The concern there is just our overall depth. We are bringing in four-five freshmen (in the fall) and two or three of them are going to have to play. I wish they were here for the spring because that would give us a jump there.

(meaning, they are in deep [censored] in the secondary!)
