Can you imagine the uproar and gnashing of teeth if OSU landed only 6 athletes rated 4 stars are better in any given class? Wisky has only landed six in their prior FOUR classes combined.

Yet here they are highly rated nationally and in the Big Ten. And it isn't just the cyclical thing where a large number of seniors come together at the right moment. Wisky only has 5 Seniors among their starting 22.

I wont argue they may be a bit overrated - but they ARE good.

I would say it is indeed a cyclical type of thing in the sense you never hear about it when they have a bad season and lose 4-6 games. It happens a lot to the second echelon teams. So it seems they are perrenially tough but in realitivly short periods and "tough" could still very well mean a 3-4 loss season in which they would be complemented on their scrapiness or praised for one big upset.

They have their "glory" in small doses but simply cannot maintain it. Even the "glory" for teams like that is a BTT and a BCS Bowl at the very most. Any BCS/Jan 1 Bowl is a good year for them. They have no reasonable shot at a NC, ever.

We've played in 4 BCS games in 5 years with 2 being the NC game and are going into '07 feeling we have something to prove. Its all about perspective.

Yeah, they started him as a QB, figured if we couldn't see his throat we couldn't choke him I guess, but after we rotated off the schedule for a couple of years they moved him to defense.

Depends on what type of suspension it is. If it's a Joe Pa special, you're suspended until we can switch the story around (but you'll still have to help pick up rubbish at home games), if it's a Fulmer special, you're suspended, but if we can't find anyone better than you, you're back in, if it's a Lloyd Carr special, you're suspended while we can convince a couple of recruits that there's unlimited playing time at the TE spot at UM. Now, if Barry Alvarez was still your coach, you would get the dreaded "miss the first couple days of practice until this blows over" suspension. Unfortunately for Jamal, he's not getting the Spurrier suspension, where it's obvious that the school is messing up what football is trying to accomplish. My point is that we can expect to see Jamal in Columbus when it counts. Same with Butler from up north (sorry, different thread, same song and dance.)

The Badgers will be breaking in a new quarterback in Tyler Donovan, but basically all he will be asked to do is hand off, throw to tight end Travis Beckum and throw it deep down the sidelines to his receivers. Shouldn't be too much of a problem. Even though left tackle Joe Thomas is gone, the Badgers grow linemen like grandmas grow rhubarb, so there are candidates to work with. Most of the defense is back for the Badgers, but they will have some replacements up the middle. Elijah Hodge replaces last year's leading tackler Mark Zalewski at middle linebacker, and two new safeties will now patrol the backfield for the Badgers. Both kicking specialists return and both are awards candidates.

Wisconsin RB Lance Smith will not travel with team

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin running back Lance Smith, who is facing battery charges, will not be allowed to play in away games this season. Smith will miss Saturday's game at UNLV and games at Illinois, Penn State, Ohio State and Minnesota.

As of the start of the conference season...

• The Buckeyes current winning streaks in conference games is at 14.
• The school record winning streak for conference games is 17, most recently equaled from 1974-76.
• If the Buckeyes tie the record against Purdue on October 6th, they'll have to wait 2 weeks to break the record against Michigan State because of the mid-season OOC tilt with Kent State.
• The conference record winning streak is held by John Cooper, who ensured that Michigan remained undefeated for 19 games from 1990-1992. So I guess it's actually Michigan's record.
• Ohio State can tie the record against Penn State and set a new mark of 20 straight conference wins against Wisconsin a week later.
• If the Badgers remain undefeated until that game, their current nation's longest winning streak (I-A (FBS)) will be snapped at 19 games, returning a favor from the 2003 season.
• Either way, if the Badgers and Buckeyes are undefeated when they meet on November 3rd, someone's 19 game streak is going down.

Badgers WR Swan has torn hamstring, done for season

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin wide receiver Luke Swan will miss the rest of the season because of a torn hamstring and is scheduled for surgery Wednesday.

The fifth-year senior had two touchdowns this season for the No. 19 Badgers and was averaging 18 yards a catch. He was hurt near the end of Saturday's game against Illinois, landing awkwardly following a 17-yard reception.

Swan's loss is a blow to the Badgers (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) following the team's first defeat of the season against Illinois. Freshman punt returner David Gilreath is expected to replace Swan at wide receiver.
