Haven't re-watched the game...but I do believe we played much more man coverage than last year.
LSU formationed the D to get some great mismatches and also just flat out torched a few DBs...including Malcolm.

I hate to admit this, because it just stings too much, but that 4 man bunch wide right, throw to the TE to the left was just a great great call. I would have liked to see OSU do something like that...

Not to mention that their DL stepped it up a couple notches after our first two drives. They totally clogged the middle from our third possesion on. They totally blew up our OL on 3rd and goal from the 2...

Turnovers always kill you, and can alter a well thought out gameplan tremendously. Part of the turnover issue was due to pressure on the QB, and another part was due to something we've seen all year: Boeckman underthrowing deeper routes. Typically, that's been broken up by our WRs, or functioned much like a punt in terms of field position change. However, when the WR doesn't break it up AND doesn't tackle the DB, you get a big return, which means a big field position change and momentum change.
I haven't heard a lot of people talk about the field position issue either. We seem to be stuck on this playcalling broken CD without understanding that down, distance and field position restricts you to certain parts of your playchart.
Failed execution left us in a lot of limited down and distance situations. The inability of the defense to get turnovers or three-and-outs early left us battling against field position. Turnovers and resulting scores also left us in less-favorable field position. You have a lot more options on 1st and 10 at the 50 than you do on 3rd and 8 at your own 30.
Execution, turnovers, penalties and defense were the main culprits on Monday. Offensive play calling may make the list, but it's so far down as to be virtually irrelevant. Hold on to the football, stay in the pocket, make accurate throws, don't drop the ball, don't commit stupid penalties, and play better defense and this becomes a different conversation.
I just don't see how "run Beanie more" or "be more unpredictable" fits into any of that.

While we are admitting that LSU actually played a pretty good game, I think Matt Flynn deserves a ton of credit. I recall several plays where he made a perfect pass with someone in his face.
The only thing that really stood out to me on D was how wide our DL was lining up when they were in the spread. Big Vern was so far out on the edge, it was like he had an extra 8-10 yards to go to make a play. I'm not an X and O's guy, so I don't know if you just have to play contain with some of those formations or if you can bunch up in the middle and let them try to beat you on the edge.
