ERIC ALBRECHT Dispatch
Senior point guard Devon Moore's winning attitude drives Northland's City League resurgence.

Four years ago, Devon Moore was regarded as a can't-miss high school basketball star -- not altogether surprising considering he averaged nearly 30 points per game as an eighth-grader at Monroe Alternative Middle School and his team never lost a game.
The surprise showed itself when Moore decided which high school he would attend.
Among his choices were longtime City League power Brookhaven, which was coming off four straight appearances in the Division I state tournament, and Beechcroft, the school his entire family had attended and an accomplished basketball program of its own.
But also in Moore's picture was Northland, which had posted losing records in four of the previous five seasons and hadn't won a City title since 1991. It was not considered one of the chic programs in town.

Continued......
Quote:
Because Moore blends in, it takes some observers longer than others to gain an appreciation of his value.
Perhaps it has affected his college recruitment. Until recently, only a few Mid-American Conference programs had taken notice. But Ohio State coach Thad Matta recently expressed an interest in Moore; Penn State, Vanderbilt, Providence, West Virginia and other major programs were quick to follow suit.
"If you catch Ohio State's eye, you're doing something," Sullinger said. "I've known what a special kid he is for four years, and I say that as humbly as I can. He's been a blessing … a real godsend to this program."

Moore may be what the doctor ordered as help at the point next year, although I think Crater, Hill and the talented wings will do fine if tOSU doesn't go after more help.

It's good to see that Moore is getting more attention now, if he is deserving of a major D1 scholly offer, he should get it now, it's always fun following the careers of guys from C-bus even when not playing for the Bucks.

Did not get a chance to catch the City League Championship game, but I did rewatch the Northland vs Brookhaven game from early in the year and was pretty impressed with Moore's play. I'm not sure how good this years Brookhaven team is, but they are usually filled with quick athletic players and Moore more than held his own.

He showed an ability to split double teams and to beat his man and get into the lane. He showed good floor vision when penetrating, often finding open teamates. He seemed to play good defense both on and off the ball at times (like most HS'ers lapsed at times) He also made a couple of threes (missed some too) and showed decent touch.

I have no idea if he is tOSU material (I have no idea what the staff's criteria are) but he looks like a very good player who played under control for the most part and was in control of his team, one thing that was a little concerning is that he is very thin, but this did not stop him from being aggressive with the ball and on defense.

I would think that before Thad offers Moore a scholarship they will be very sure he is Big 10 material especially with the lack of scholarships available for 2009.

Oh I agree completely, I was just posting up some observations based on where I saw that tOSU was showing some interest.

I am far from good at projecting talent at the HS level, though I do remember going to watch Jerry Francis at Wherle(sp) ugliest uniform color combination ever. Also caught Eli Brewster at Wherle and Ed Jenkins at Eastmoor (?) (boy did Jenkins have a nice post game at the HS level) Also watched Jimmy Jackson and others at the State tourney.

I do think Moore can have a solid career at the D1 level (maybe not major) as he has had good coaching and seems to have good athletic skills and good fundamentals.

I caught some of the game on tv and felt bad for Moore and the Northland guys. At times late in the game (and at other times throughout) Moore tried to take the team on his shoulders and be the scorer, that he hasn't had to be most of the year. He had a couple of real nice pull up jumpers that just would not go down, or this game may have ended on a happier note for Northland. Good luck to him and his teamates, they definitely went down swinging.

Does he have any offers to any schools? I saw him play a couple times and he is a pretty good ball player but I don't see him being OSU talent. But I do want to see him end up at a good school. I like seeing City leauge kids get scholarships.

Didn't see this coming...

I do like Moore tho, and the staff has obviously seen him quite a bit...He would have more offers if he had better grades...It is a free redshirt year type season for tOSU for Moore to get his grades in order, get bigger and work on his game, and then have 4 more years here...

He is a long PG, that could also play the 2g...I really think that the recent interest in the combo guards leads me to believe that the staff wants more depth in the backcourt...Hill will be a senior in 09' so in Moore's soph season it will be Crater (JR), Moore (SO), Offut (JR/SO), Golden (FR)...It will be one pure point in Crater and 3 guys that could play either or...I like the idea of having depth in the backcourt at the point, look at Kansas and their 3 pgs with chalmers, robinson, and Collins...
