My take is that Roe was choice #1 because he is an incredible athlete and lots of upside (same can be said for Gates). However, this team will already have a bunch of athletes and when Babbit showed interest, I think we really liked his skill set for the 4. Maybe the staff new Roe was looking like a difficult get and turned to Babbit or maybe Babbit became the choice of the staff and Roe began to slide away. My guess is that the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but I don't think for a second that Babbit was a backup plan at any point in this recruitment. I think he fits what Matta wants in a 4 and seeing some of his highlights has me very excited. Pretty incredible talent for a 6'8" HS junior.

Not to get to far off the thread but Roe was the #1 target early on in the process but it has been apparent that Ohio State was really not in the race and the staff started to look at other options....November rolled around, Ohio State got involved with Babbitt and at that point he was the first choice for the final spot. Gates may have listed Ohio State recently, but the contact between Gates and the staff has been non-existent for awhile now.....draw your own conclusions. Would they have taken Roe? Of course, but that ship sailed long ago.....

Babbitt is a tremendous player and will have a great career at tOSU.....perfect fit for Matta's system.

Babbitt commits to Ohio State

Galena High boys basketball star Luke Babbitt just couldn't keep his secret any longer.

Local television stations reported on Tuesday that Babbitt has announced he will be going to Ohio State, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation. Originally, Ohio State wasn't even among Babbitt's top 10 choices, but the Galena junior has family ties in the area, leading him to choose the Buckeyes.

Well put...Babbitt was certainly not a Plan B to Roe...the Roe ship started to set sail last summer and the staff quickly targeted another 4 who could fill out this class and Babbitt was that target. I don't think Gates was ever really an option...the staff never pursued him the way they initially pursued either Roe or Babbitt. Gates is a very different player than Roe or Babbitt and to me was too similar to a guy like Lauderdale to warrant an offer.

Galena?s Luke Babbitt has verbally committed to play for Ohio State.

Luke Babbitt will be going back to his homeland.
The Galena High junior, who was born in Ohio, said late Tuesday that he has given a verbal commitment to play basketball at Ohio State starting in the 2008-09 season.
Babbitt, who led the Grizzlies to the Northern 4A Regional and Class 4A state championships the past two weeks, won't be able to sign his National Letter of Intent until the early signing period, which begins in early November.
"I am 100 percent sure," Babbitt said of his choice of Ohio State. "I can't see myself going anywhere else."

Johnson, Babbitt split honor

Once again, the Northern 4A Region's boys basketball coaches couldn't choose between Armon Johnson and Luke Babbitt.
Johnson, a Hug High senior guard, and Babbitt, a Galena junior forward, were named the region's co-Players of the Year for the second year in a row by the league's coaches.
Babbitt, who led the Grizzlies to the Class 4A state title last weekend in Las Vegas, averaged 28 points and 10 rebounds a game this season. The 6-foot-8 power forward, also added the second Northern 4A Regional championship to his r?sum?.
The 6-3 Johnson, whose Hawks were eliminated from the postseason by Babbitt and the Grizzlies in the Northern 4A Regional semifinals, averaged 33.6 points a game.
Johnson has signed a Letter of Intent to play at the University of Nevada next season and Babbitt has verbally committed to Ohio State.
