Galena's Babbitt, Coach Maurer top basketball honors RENO, Nev. (AP) - Galena's star forward Luke Babbitt and coach Tom Maurer received the top honors on the all-state basketball team selected by Nevada's two largest newspapers. Babbitt, a 6-foot-8 junior who already has committed to Ohio State for the 2007-08 season, averaged 28 points and 11 rebounds a game for the state champion Grizzlies. He was named the Class 4A boys Basketball Player of the Year and his coach the Class 4A boys Coach of the Year by the Reno Gazette-Journal and Las Vegas Review-Journal. Babbitt tops All-State team JOE SANTORO RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL Posted: 3/22/2007 Galena?s Luke Babbitt, 32, drives the ball down the court against Canyon Springs? Juron Criner during the Nevada State Basketball Championship Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Feb. 22. Babbitt is the Nevada 4A state Player of the Year. Northern Nevada had the best Class 4A boys basketball team, player and coach this season. The Galena Grizzlies gave Northern Nevada its second consecutive large-school state title in February by beating Canyon Springs and Mojave in the state tournament at Las Vegas' Orleans Arena a month ago and have been awarded with the Reno Gazette-Journal/ Las Vegas-Review Journal's state Player and Coach of the Year award. Junior forward Luke Babbitt, the centerpiece of Galena's state championship team, was named the state's Player of the Year after averaging 28 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks a game for the 23-9 Grizzlies.
