Howie Long's son must decide which sport to play

Charlottesville (Va.) St. Anne's-Belfield offensive tackle/defensive end Kyle Long is not only trying to decide which school he'll attend, he's also trying to decide what sport he'll play.
"I still don't know if I want to play football or baseball," said the 6-foot-7, 280-pound son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie Long. "I have a ton of offers in football, but there's been some talk of being drafted in the first round out of high school next year. I'm deciding about which sport will provide me the best future."
Long is a standout tackle and defensive end in football, drawing offers from Florida State, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Penn State, Florida and many others. In baseball, he is dominating left-handed pitcher who doubles as a .500 hitter. Long doesn't want to play both sports in college.

I wonder if Bob Todd has even attempted to make contact, afterall, OSU has the best record of any school north of the Mason-Dixon line the last 15 years....

None of this makes any sense to me. It seems that if baseball is his primary option, he shouldn't even be going to college. I just don't understand how baseball should weigh into his college choice. If he chooses college, he should be choosing based upon his football desires. (And if he still wants to go to FSU, I can't blame him for that...)

I wonder if the rest of Block O are in contact regularly.

Long doesn't want to play both sports in college.
"I want to pick one and play it so I can concentrate and improve," he said. "I don't want to do anything halfway, so I need to decide eventually which sport I'll be playing. I don't have to figure that out right now though, so I'm looking at everything."

I would think he should pick a school based on Football, and then decide whether to enter the MLB draft. I don't see the college baseball impact.

He's a big left-handed pitcher who can supposedly throw 94 mph...if thats the case, he'll get drafted VERY early in the draft and never step foot on a college campus.

My guess is that Kyle doesn't know which sport he wants to play in college, so he might be looking at what schools have the best of both worlds... That way he can make up his mind at a later date and still be in fine shape...

The college baseball thing might be the plan for if he gets drafted lower than he wants but still wants to commit to baseball... If that's the case, tOSU can't compete with FSU for baseball...

He has said he loves whichever sport is in season...right now, baseball is king.

He has said that his brother has advised to take the baseball money and not endure the chronic punishment of football.

He is his father's son...that is a savage bloodline that loves football.

My thoughts are that he takes a few visits during football and realizes that is what he wants...he commits somewhere and signs on NLOID. Then, the baseball bug rises back up and he watches the draft position. After that, who knows which way he will go...with baseball getting the last impression, my gut says he goes the MLB way.

Remind me quite a bit of the Brackman kid out of Cincinnati who went to N.C. State for both basketball and baseball. Dropped basketball last year to concentrate solely on baseball. Long could do the same thing.

However, his dad loves JT and spoke admirably of him on the Fox pregame show shortly before the NC. championship so I don't think old Bobby will have any affect with regard to that part of the decision. However, let's not even try to compare the FSU baseball coach with Bob Todd. Todd's time has come and gone.

I wouldn't be so sure that would be is his motive. It's usually the "folks" that are enamoured with the $$$$...something they at least probably have a little of.

Our recruiting guy from FOS talked to him yesterday and he said that Kyle told him that he was a heavy FSU baseball lean.

FWIW - I asked a close family friend yesterday, and was told that KL is focused on playing football in college - in fact, the email only had one word in it, "Football."

Having faced Kyle multiple times in games, I can honestly say I've never seen him throw harder than 86-87. He's a good kid and works hard, but his pitching isn't even above average for highschool pitching. If he goes anywhere for baseball, it will be for first base.
