The Longs live on a 65-acre spread in a refurbished Georgian Estate home in nearby Ivy which is only a few miles from the University of Virginia, where Long's oldest son, Chris, 20, will be a senior and is a 6-4, 278-pound preseason Playboy All-American defensive end.

"Chris is projected as being a first-round NFL draft pick," says Long proudly.

Another son, Kyle, 17, who will be a senior at St. Anne's Belfield, is even bigger at 6-7 and 290, a standout offensive tackle and defensive end on the football team and slugging first baseman and left-handed pitcher on the baseball team.

"Kyle's had offers to play football from all the major schools, but he's committed to Florida State where he plans to play baseball," says Long. "He batted over .500 and also has a fastball that reaches 92 miles an hour. He likes baseball even more than football, and he's quite a football player."

Long's youngest son, Howie, 16, is a shrimp at 6-0 and 185 compared to his hulking brothers, but as a sophomore last season he quarterbacked St. Anne's Belfield to the state championship, throwing 21 scoring passes and having only one interception.

"Howie did very well, but he also is a terrific lacrosse player and I have a feeling that's what he'll play in college," says Long.

The news on Kyle Long wasn?t as good. The outfielder/lefthander from Saint Anne?s-Belfield High (Charlottesville, Va.) was diagnosed with tendonitis in both of his triceps, and was not expected to make the trip to San Diego for the Aflac game as he recovers from the injury and prepares for his senior football season.

?The doctors have told him to take a couple of weeks off, but the reports on his overall health are better than we could have ever hoped for,? said Saint Anne?s-Belfield coach Eric McGrane, who also said that Long would miss the Aflac Classic, but was planning on playing football in the fall and was expected to be ready for baseball season.

The son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie, Kyle Long is a physical marvel and a nationally ranked football recruit who has committed to play baseball at Florida State. Part of his workout regimen included 300-pound hangcling lifts.

Change of heart?: Rumors continue to swirl that Charlottesville (Va.) St. Anne's-Belfield offensive lineman Kyle Long could be re-thinking his decision to play only baseball in college. Long committed to Florida State for baseball early this summer, but has apparently been thinking about continuing his football career either at FSU or possibly at Ohio State. Long denies the rumors and simply says he's committed to FSU, but keep an eye on this one. Long is a five-star prospect as a football player, but Howie Long's son is also an outstanding baseball pitcher.

I don't want to give away any premium info from another site but there could be some truth to this rumor. Not sure of the level of contact but there appears to be continued interest.

I have no inside info here at all but I honestly expected this to happen when football season rolled around. I tend to think that this isn't over and if you can get Kyle Long, you take him. As a disclaimer for the cliff jumpers: The staff's possible/rumored contact in no way represents the coaching staff's actual beliefs on our status with J.B. Shugarts.

Brewster and him have formed a strong bond.... they talk regularly. If he decides to play football.... chances are he will go to Ohio State.

Me too. Just from listening to grad I expected football interest to pick up during football season. I also expect baseball interest to pick up when it's time to get back into baseball shape.

Exactly...grad has told everyone that Kyle tends to get excited about what ever season is...the question is can the football coaches from FSU/OSU/etc. do enough to have that excitement carry over into next baseball season...

PREP FOOTBALL: Kyle Long injured as St. Anne's falls to 0-3

Friday?s biggest blow didn?t come in the form of the team?s two fumbles, an interception or penalties. Instead, it was the injury and hospitalization of its best player, two-way lineman Kyle Long.

The senior fell to the ground following an attempted tackle on Liberty running back Jamal Pannell about 2 minutes into the fourth quarter after receiving an apparent blow to the back of the neck.

The game stopped for nearly 30 minutes, while an ambulance came for Long, who lay still on the field except for the occasional moving of his right arm.

Blake told his players after the injury that Long was responsive and talking. The ambulance was precautionary, he said.

By all reports, the star player was in ?good? condition, Blake said.

Long?s father, NFL Hall of Famer and current television analyst Howie Long, stood at his son?s side while players consoled his other son, STAB?s starting junior quarterback Howie Long.

?He?ll be back,? said senior running back Jack Thomasson. ?I?m sure about that.?
