Ohio High football ratings

We're expecting our new Ohio High magazine in the mail any day. Entering summer, here were the magazine's top-rated area football seniors for fall 2007:

1. Elder TE Kyle Rudolph (#4 overall prospect in Ohio) -- verbal to Notre Dame
2. La Salle WR DeVier Posey (#8 overall in Ohio) -- verbal to Ohio State
3. Lakota West WR Bakari Bussey (tied for #25 overall)
4. Wyoming DE Jordan Bright (#35 overall)
5. Middletown WR Phillip Barnett (#38 overall)
6. Hamilton OL Demicus Brown (#51 overall)
7. Withrow QB Juandez Brown (#53 overall)
8. Winton Woods CB Lamonte Lattimore (#54 overall)
9. Hamilton CB Kenny Veal (#56 overall)
10. Middletown OL Chip Robinson (#58 overall)

St. Xavier RB Darius Ashley is No. 68 overall, with his size (5-9) probably keeping him from being rated higher. The guy just makes plays, folks. .... Colerain QB Doug Reynolds is No. 90 overall. .... St. Xavier LB Fred Craig and Moeller QB Ross Oltorik are among "Others to Watch."

As we've done in years past, we'll come out with our top 20 seniors in our official top 20 football recruits in the Dade football preview in August.
In the meantime, here are my early summer top 20 list.

Again, this is not an official list just an early stab at ranking some of the top players in the county. I'm sure I'll miss tons others that I'll soon hear about from readers, so by all means let's create some buzz.

1. Marcus Forston, Northwestern, DT, 6-3, 290, 4.8, rated in the top 30 overall by rivals.com
2. Aldarius Johnson, Northwestern, WR, 6-3, 195, 4.5, rated 41st overall by rivals. UF, UM, FSU, Georgia, UNC
3. Etienne Sabino, Krop, 6-3, 230, 4.6 has over 20 offers, FSU likes a lot
4. Brandon Harris, Booker T. Washington, CB, 5-10, 175, 4.45, could be UM guy, like big brother Tim
5. Marcus Robinson, Homestead, LB, 6-2, 215, 4.5 had 18 sacks last year, can also play WR, tremendous athlete; USC, Michigan on the list as well as the big 3
6. Greg Shaw, Monsignor Pace, OL, 6-6, 275, 25-30 offers for Willie Williams' younger bro
7. Sean Spence, Northwestern, 6-1, 200, 4.6 - been watching this guy since freshman year and he's been a beast of a linebacker with all the makings of a good one at the next level.

FWIW, OSU and USC are the only schools in the top 10 with less than 10 commits so far. 7 of the 10 have 14+ commits already and 2 (UCLA and Texas) have over 20.

Oh...and Michigan is at #12.

We should have a 4 star average if/when Buchanan is upgraded to 3 stars(which will happen IMO since I think he's kicking in one of the allstar games). Add potential five stars in Pryor and Hale, and four stars in Scott, Goebel, et al, and we have a top 5/3 class easily.

I do have to admit though, ND is putting together a pretty good class. Their Oline class is a little weak, but otherwise they have a really good class. I thought their highly rated class last year was overrated, but I was surprised when I looked at their commit list.

FSU will also have a killer class.

I love when they get real scouts doing this. That's why I post the stuff from The Pittsburgh Sports Report so much. I'm not even sure if any of the national Scout or Rivals guys ever worked for a college before. That's why I take their info with a grain of salt. I'm not sure they are qualified any more than any of us.

Good stuff from Muck. The next question for me, is who wins more games with the least amount of ranked talent? Is it more important to get the top-end recruits, or does player development win out? The answer is probably somewhere in between. You need those game-changers to win the big one, but you can't get to the big one without the day to day grinders. Such is the world of college football.

The things that stand out to me from the above list...

1. Most of the top programs are pretty equal in the talent level they are bringing in.

2. You'd think USC would never lose a game with the numbers they are bringing in.

3. Miami & FSU have really fallen off the charts.

4. ND fans are about out of excuses regarding talent.

5. TSUN still sucks.
