MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Already down two marquee players and facing his biggest decision at Ben Davis, first-year Giants coach Mike Kirschner sent a resounding message Friday about the kind of coach he will be.

One who goes for it.

The aggressiveness doesn't always work out.

The Class 5A No. 3-ranked Giants fell 15-7 to No. 5 Penn in overtime, Ben Davis' first loss in six games at Penn's Freed Field. The Giants fell short on a key fourth-down conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter to set up the overtime, one of several Ben Davis drives that stalled deep in Penn territory.

"We did everything we had to do," Kirschner said. "We just didn't score the points we needed to to win the game."

The key play for the Giants (1-1) came not in the overtime period, when backup quarterback Greg Rice's last-chance pass was broken up in the end zone, but minutes earlier. With the score tied 7-7, Ben Davis had driven deep into Penn territory, mostly on the strength of quarterback MarQueis Gray's legs.

No...he is a righty and broke his left arm. It was originally reported as an re-aggrivated wrist injury but obviously turned out to be much more serious. Hope he bounces back...I think he has a chance to be a really good one. If we were going to miss on Pryor I would take Gray in a second...luckily that's not going to happen.

From the Minnesota site...has not eliminated anyone but clearly favors Minnesota and Oregon.

What are the chances Gray picks Minny over Oregon Saturday? Without knowing anything about it, I'd have to guess Oregon gets the nod here? I'd actually prefer to see this kid in the Big Ten.

Marqueis really impressed me. He was faster than I expected and threw the ball very well. That's a great pick up for minnesota.

I think this is great news. Congrats to MarQueis and Minnesota, this kid will be good for the conference. I hope this sticks, but I can also see RR come sniffing around before this is said and done. Am I wrong wad? I hope so....

To me it seems like he hasn't been an under the radar prospect. It looks like he fell in love with Minnesota and has had them on top for a bit. Although the lure of scUM seems interesting...it's a bigger project right now than Minnesota. I don't think he would have announced on this type of stage if he wasn't serious about sticking to it.


I'm happy for Tim Brewster. I've always had a soft spot for the Gophers, mostly because of Mason and the Columbus players that go up there. But let's make the conference stronger!

Got that right!! I was shocked at his poise and playmaking ability. I had no idea he was so completely capable like that.

I worry about this guy as an opponent! If he stays w/Brewster, which I think he will, or heads elsewhere, (RR) God forbid, he can beat you any given time regardless of where he is. Right now, I think he has much more potential than Juice ever did...and he's only a step or two down from TP, imho.

He reminded me a lot of Ell Roberson, who was an explosive, but erratic, QB for K-State. Extremely inaccurate with 48 percent completions in high school. But is a big kid, with excellent mobility, and a strong arm. Probably projects to lead Minnesota to a few shocking upsets, as well as embarrassing defeats. That is if he can qualify.
