He has offers from Syracuse, Marshall, Cincinnati, Illinois, Kansas, Ball State, Boston College, Akron, Michigan State and Indiana. He will take an official visit set for Illinois on 11/30. This is another of those late bloomers who will likely be caught in a numbers crunch...however, this kid has gained some major attention due to his tremendous upside, motor, and tenacity. Akron Garfield star Mercilus picks Illini Wednesday, December 05, 2007 Tim Rogers Plain Dealer Reporter Akron Garfield two-way end Whitney Mercilus, described by coach Bob Sax as the most complete student-athlete he has coached, has made an oral commitment to Illinois. The 6-3, 235-pound Mercilus said he reached his decision Monday and canceled a planned trip to Kansas this weekend. Kansas and Illinois were his final two choices. "Illinois is a lot closer to home and I have to admit that had something to do with my decision," said Mercilus, who caught 24 passes for 417 yards and eight touchdowns this season and was named to the Northeast Ohio Inland District all-star team.
