Ohio Spring Practice Begins: March 26 Game: April 21
The early spring buzz ... Ohio wants to win and it wants to win now. Head coach Frank Solich only brought in four JUCO transfers, but they're all expected to plug holes and see be involved from day one. The program isn't big on going the JUCO route, but it had to or else risk falling behind further and further in the improving East. Boo Jackson was a JUCO All-America quarterback, Hilton Dawson is a ready-made free safety, Patrick Tafua is a playmaker ready to make an impact, and DT Corey Moncrief will be around for spring practices and has to take over one of the vacated spots.
The big spring question is ... Can the offense go on without Kalvin McRae? The great back carried the offense throughout the last few years with the passing game hitched along for the ride. The air attack improved by leaps and bounds last year, and was far more efficient than it was in 2006, but it was still McRae's offense when things got tight. Now it'll be up to the quarterbacks to make more plays, and it'll be vital to find new rushing options this spring.
The most important position to watch is ... Quarterback. Brad Bower had a nice season, but he started to get shoved aside late in the year. Theo Scott got more and more time, but he's hardly a lock to take over the No. 1 spot with Boo Jackson a top dual-threat playmaker who didn't come to Athens to sit on the bench. Brandon Jones and Josh Febus are likely fighting for the No. 3 job with the odd man out likely to go elsewhere.
Spring attitude... East title or bust. Everyone in the East has an honest shot of winning the title, but Ohio has been the division's best team over the last two years and is loaded for another big run. The problem spots appear to have been solved by the recruiting class, while several positions are loaded with solid veterans.

The Bobcats got three 1st place votes, but still ended in 6th place of 7 teams in the east.

I have to wonder what the 3 people who voted them #1 in the east were thinking. They're replacing the best RB they've had in awhile and they don't figure to have much of an offense at all.

The MAC East is pretty even, it will be toss up. Ohio has 4 running backs that will get a shot at replacing McRae. Definitely a daunting task. The running game will be by committee. They have two QBs that are battling for the starting spot. They can both run and throw. The WRs & TEs are decent. I think Ohio is trying to implement more spread into their scheme. They will try to throw more if they can't establish any form of a running game.

I really want to see a decisive victory and the youngins get some serious PT. (one most especially)

Come on man. Can we cap it at a seven touchdown victory? I mentioned this in another thread but I think this game will be very similar to OSU's game against Can't State last year.

I'm not predicting an 11 TD victory...and if it goes like the KSU game last year I'll be disappointed, even though tOSU completely dominated defensively, I want the O-line to own these first two squads and roll into so cal with a big ass fn chip on their shoulder.

Great news for this game - almost a cinch that Ohio U will be able to afford new uniforms - if they can get their O-lineman to pony up.

ATHENS, Ohio -- Most lottery winners, upon learning they've hit the jackpot, run to the store where they played their lucky numbers to make sure, then find the nearest state lottery commission office to place a claim on their prize.


Michael Eynon did all of those things. And then he went to football practice.


Eynon, a senior offensive lineman at Ohio University, matched five numbers in Tuesday's multistate Mega Millions drawing on the ticket he bought at a Shop Mart in Athens -- good for $250,000 before taxes, The Columbus Dispatch reported.


"It hasn't settled in yet," he said, according to the report. "I've been out throwing footballs, and it's still the same routine."


The odds of matching five numbers, excluding the Mega Ball, were 1 in 3,904,701. Had Eynon matched the Mega Ball as well, he would have won the $34 million grand prize, according to the report.

"Everyone was like, 'Dude, you were one number off,'" Eynon said, according to the newspaper. "I was like, 'I'm satisfied.' This is awesome either way."

I posted the numbers over in the OU to play OSU in 2008 thread but unless an Ohio team is completely helpless to stop even the most basic of fronts and liberal substitutions, a JT coached OSU team will "only" put about a mid 20's type of spread on them. The only two maulings of a Fredo school under JT both came against Kent State teams that just couldn't defend themselves.

Not saying that OU isn't ripe to catch one of those type of beatings, just that JT will not let the score get out of hand if he can help it.

Northwestern, Indiana or Minny on the other hand can kiss the baby (especially NU). JT will allow things to get much uglier with these teams.

The Bobcats lost a heartbreaker on the road, 21-20 at Wyoming. Sounds like it was better than some of the other crap on the tube today.

I'll be there so I'm excited, but I also am curious to see what we do without Beanie. Even in the best case scenario I don't see him playing next week.

Will TP get more action as a result of Beanie's absence? I think it's possible, despite his inexperience.

It will depend if OSU scores early like it did today. If that happens, then I think Pryor will get 1st quarter action again.
