I was just stating the obvious because I think ScarletNGray, was referring to QB's who come in after the starters getting hurt, have a weird way of playing like Graham/Colt/Sam/Zac Harrell/McCoy/Bradford/Robinson!

The uncertainty surrounding Northwestern's quarterback situation was marked on Monday with a bold "OR" on the depth chart.

C.J. Bacher "OR" Mike Kafka will start against Ohio State (7-2, 4-1 Big Ten), which really narrows nothing down as the Wildcats (7-2, 3-2) prepare for Saturday's game at sold-out Ryan Field.

The dilemma, coach Pat Fitzgerald said, has nothing to do with talent level and hinges on Bacher's health.

"If we can get him up to speed or close to it, he'll be our starting quarterback," Fitzgerald said.

While the Wildcats are sorting out personnel on offense, the defense took another hit.

Defensive end Vince Browne will miss the rest of the regular season and possibly a bowl game because of a torn left knee ligament he suffered against Minnesota. Browne, whose 22 tackles included four sacks, is expected to undergo surgery this week.

Fitzgerald said he expects junior Marshall Thomas to play more.

"It's very unfortunate," Fitzgerald said. "Vince has been playing very well for us. We'll get that fixed and get him back as quickly as we can."

Northwestern, ranked No. 24 in the BCS standings, has coped well with injuries, overcoming the loss of Bacher, linebacker Malcolm Arrington and running back Tyrell Sutton.

The defense has seen several players step up, including Big Ten defensive player of the week Brendan Smith, who was honored for returning an interception for the game-winning touchdown against Minnesota.

Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bacher moved better at practice Tuesday, but he needs every day to become easier if he wants to play Saturday against Ohio State.

After sitting out of practice all last week and Saturday against Minnesota with a hamstring injury, Bacher and backup Mike Kafka took turns taking snaps at practice.

"I can't open up yet," Bacher said. "I'm just trying to prepare myself mentally more than anything else. It's going to need to progress more. It's going to get better."

Coach Pat Fitzgerald has listed Kafka and Bacher as equal on the depth chart.

Bacher was injured Oct. 25 in a 21-19 loss at Indiana and sat out the 24-17 victory at Minnesota, where Kafka led the Wildcats with 217 rushing yards.

Planting his leg is no problem, Bacher said, but he has not healed enough to scramble effectively.
