E. Gordon Gee had the right idea, just the wrong year. The Ohio State president remarked after the 13-13 tie against Michigan in 1992 that "a tie is one of our greatest wins ever."
If he had said it in 1951, fewer OSU fans would have wondered what in the world he meant.
The '51 season was Woody Hayes' first at Ohio State, but that's about all for which the forgettable season is remembered. The Buckeyes finished 4-3-1 as the offense struggled to adjust to the new T-formation implemented by Hayes. OSU scored just 109 points after having put up 286 in 1950 when Wes Fesler was coach.
Hayes wasn't the most popular person in Columbus as the unranked Buckeyes prepared to play host to No. 3 Illinois on Nov. 16. He apparently also wasn't the most popular person in the locker room, Ohio State football historian Jack Park said. Woody's methods differed sharply from that of his predecessor, who had run the single wing offense featuring Heisman Trophy winner Vic Janowicz.

1. Build a "Juice" box

Nobody needs to remind Ohio State what Illinois QB Juice Williams did to the Buckeyes last year (four TD passes, 70 yards rushing). OSU's defense needs to stay disciplined up front. Keep Williams in the pocket and don't give him lanes for a draw or allow him to roll to the perimeter. Make him stand and deliver: He can wing it, but 14 times this season he has thrown it to the other team.
2. Benn, don't break

Sophomore receiver Arrelious Benn is a multitalented threat for the Illini; he is third in the Big Ten in all-purpose yards (149.6 per game). His 947 yards receiving are a big reason why Illinois leads the conference in yards per catch (15.2). Ohio State, meanwhile, allows a Big Ten-low 8.9 per catch. Illinois needs Benn to get the better of a stellar secondary for some big plays.

Tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells (116.3 yards per game) is healthy, and backup Daniel Herron and QB Terrelle Pryor are contributing as well -- Pryor with third-down conversion runs of 15 and 21 yards last week. Illinois is seventh in the Big Ten in rushing defense and is led by LB Brit Miller (110 tackles, 15 1/2 for loss).
When Buckeyes pass

Edge: Illinois

OSU is 104th nationally in passing at 154.4 yards a game. Pryor is coming off a 197-yard, three-touchdown day, and has thrown just three interceptions in 129 pass attempts. Illinois has intercepted just five passes. The Illini, though, lead the Big Ten and are sixth nationally with 32 sacks, and Ohio State has given up 23.
When Illini run

Edge: OSU

Illinois averages 169.7 yards per game -- 87 fewer than a year ago. Starter Daniel Dufrene left the team for one game a few weeks ago and Mikel Leshoure suffered a broken jaw in a fight with a teammate, leaving Jason Ford to pick up the slack. Western Michigan limited the Illini to 115 yards on 30 carries last week in the Broncos' upset win. Ohio State is second in the Big Ten against the run (105.4 yards per game).
