Daniel Orton stands 6-foot-10 and glides across a basketball court with remarkabe ease for someone who wears size 16 high tops.
Seven schools, nearly all Final Four regulars, are competing for his services. This summer, he flew a combined 2,200 miles to attend all-star camps in Ohio and Virginia -- where he played with unfamiliar teammates who virtually ignored him.
"I barely ever touched the ball, unless it was a rebound or something," he said.
If that's the sacrifice for post players such as Orton, their reward comes at Riverview Park Activities Center. Playing with their regular AAU teammates in the Nike Peach Jam, a four-day event that began Saturday, they will find it much easier to contribute. That can be hard to do in summer all-star camps, which players and coaches say can turn into guard-dominated, transition dunkfests.
"If you want the ball there, you have to go get it," said Orton, who joins DeMarcus Cousins (Birmingham Storm) and Keith Gallon (Houston Hoops) as the event's top class of 2009 post players.

Orton Looking to Start...............Orton will make a decision in the late signing period and playing time will be a key factor in his decision. Orton has narrowed his list to Kentucky, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Texas, Kansas, UCLA and UConn.

If he's looking for PT he should LOOK NO FURTHER! We'll have BJM vacating the starting C slot and we have no real PF ( Lighty will be playing it because we need him to ) outside Kecman who he could likely break in half. LOL

There is a HUGE opportunity here for a big guy like Orton to step in and write his ticket. Plus there is a boatload of talent at the outside spots so he could be the missing piece his one year!

That was finally a good post and right on target. I've never really thought of it that way. We will have Dallas but that's all. My concern is that he does not want to do sign until the late period which would put us in a bind.

I actually think that HELPS US, Litl.

We can be more certain of BJM's status by the late signing period. Thus we don't risk re-using his ship in the Fall and then something happens that makes him want to stay a 2nd year and we are in a real bind.

Now we do have an open ship right now so BJM's would be a 2nd one. But the APR thing is looming, with KK dealing another double blow and also losing Wallace, so maybe you can't risk using both in 09 - in case something happened where we lost one.

I'd much rather wait on Orton's decision in the Spring ( yes there is the risk that we'd get no one ) than sign a project or much lesser player in the Fall. We need real HELP INSIDE in 09-10. I haven't heard of anyone on the radar BESIDES ORTON who could provide what we so desperately need.

I'm not sure yet another JUCO is the answer ( how good is Mathis anyway and he can't help at the 5 like Orton ). A project like SVT doesn't help for that season. A JUCO 5 might be of interest but I haven't heard any names pop up.

I'd like to see another marquee name pop up from the class but so many are already spoken for it seems dubious at present.

I wonder how Orton's recruitment will be effected by taking on Big Z. Is that a sign that they feel they have no chance at Orton? Will they bother to keep recruiting him? ( hoping that they can use the 1&d BJM's ship on him - and that the APR will not preclude that signing )

Most of the guys feel that Ohio State will continue to pursue Orton because he is just too good to just say bye-bye. I am not very optimistic of our chances of landing him and really never have been. I think that TM is well aware of the APR situation and will recruit numbers accordingly.

Nike has released the list of this year?s U.S. players in the Nike Global Challenge, which will be held in Hillsboro, Ore., from Aug. 8-10. The event will pit three U.S. teams against top international high school age teams that include teams from Lithuania, Puerto Rico, Canada, the Euroleague junior tournament champion FMP-Serbia and the SEEDs Academy from Senegal.

"He should be on a frequent flier program," said Larry Orton, father of Daniel Orton, one of the top-rated high school players attending Jim Calhoun's Connecticut Elite Camp Sunday and today at Gampel Pavilion.

For a handful of kids with an abundance of options and obligations, UConn was the latest stop in a summer that is moving along like a fastbreak.

Several prominent UConn recruits are attending the camp, including Orton, a 6-foot-10 senior center from Oklahoma City. He has been to elite camps at Kentucky, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor. He's supposed to be going back to Kentucky this week for another camp, then to Portland, Ore., for the Nike Global Challenge, then to San Francisco for workouts, then to Brazil with a Nike select team.

Then again, Orton, who turns 18 Wednesday, isn't sure if his mother will let him do all that. He might skip the workout in San Francisco. Despite its hectic nature, the process isn't wearing on Orton, who averaged 15.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 6.8 blocks and five assists last season at Bishop McGuinness High. He has pared his list of schools to seven: UCLA, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Kentucky and UConn.

"I decided I needed to get up here myself and get a feel for everything," Orton said. "I've talked to a lot of the coaches. They told me they are really interested in my game, they really like what I do and how I perform. ... I'm looking to stay one year. Two years isn't bad. But I look for a college where I could see myself four years because you never know what can happen."

Looking more man than boy, Daniel Orton continually took passes under the hoop Sunday at Gampel Pavilion, turned and slammed.

Catch, turn, slam.

The drill went on like that for a few minutes amid several others at Jim Calhoun?s elite camp, and eventually, most observers inside the arena just had to get themselves a good look.

Turns out Orton ? like several other players on site ? was out to do the same thing.

Orton, a 6-foot-10, 267-pound center out of Oklahoma City, was one of 25 local and national recruits taking part in the first session of Calhoun?s two-day camp on the Storrs campus.

An array of instructional drills, speed tests and scrimmages, the event was created for several reasons: To give rising high school stars a chance to compete against other top-flight talent and members of the UConn men?s basketball coaching staff the opportunity to see some of the players it?s after.

Then, for prize prospects in the Class of 2009 like Orton and 6-foot-5 guard Dominic Cheek ? both 5-star recruits, according to Scout.com, who can have their choice of schools ? the camp is their chance to get a feel for the Huskies outside of their official visits.
