Daniel Orton is down to six schools Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Kansas, Ohio State and Kentucky. The Wildcats are his early favorite. "I'm really interested in Kentucky and their program," said Orton. "I've known the coaches for a long time. Coach (Billy) Gillispie recruited my brother, and (Assistant) Coach (Glynn) Cyprien coached him at Oklahoma State."

Oklahoma big man Daniel Orton will be among those visiting Kentucky on Oct. 10 - the date for Big Blue Madness. He'll then attend Kansas and the Jayhawk version of Midnight Madness the following weekend on Oct. 17.

Big-man prospect Orton's father says Cats No. 1


The father of highly regarded big man prospect Daniel Orton said on Wednesday that Kentucky was the favorite in the recruiting race for his son.

"I would kind of say that," Larry Orton said.

When asked why Kentucky was the favorite, the elder Orton had a one-word response: "Basketball," he said.

Orton, the son, plans to visit basketball country at an optimal time. He has set up an official campus visit for Oct. 9-11, the weekend Kentucky will stage its Big Blue Madness celebration.

Orton, the son, a 6-foot-10, 256-pound center/forward, said Kentucky was among his top three schools, along with Kansas and Ohio State. Orton, who lives in Oklahoma City, also mentioned Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas.

?As far as Orton ... the one word I would use is intimidator,? Wildeboor continued. ?At 260 pounds, he?s chiseled and a definite difference-maker on the defensive end with his ability to block shots. He controls the paint. He can shoot it from the free-throw line, has a nice baby hook he?s been working on. Robinson and Orton on the same frontline would be scary-sick.?

Orton will visit Oklahoma on Sept. 27 and Kentucky on Oct. 10. He said he?ll return to KU for the Oct. 17 Late Night in the Phog.
?I?m improving everything,? Orton told the Hartford Courant. ?I?m trying to become an overall player. My offensive game has come a long way. It?s developing really well, and I really like it. The jump hook is the main factor for me, and I?m just working on getting that down. You figure, especially in high school, if I can get that down I can shoot over the 6-4, 6-5 guys.?

Recruiting note: High school seniors Daniel Orton (Oklahoma City McGuinness High), Thomas Robinson (Brewster Academy, Wolfeboro, N.H.) and John Wall (Word of God Christian Academy, Raleigh, N.C.) completed their official campus visits to KU on Sunday.
?He had a nice time. The whole weekend was great,? Carolyn Orton, mother of Daniel, said Sunday night. Daniel Orton and his parents attended Friday night?s banquet, during which the 2007-08 Jayhawks received their national title rings.
She indicated Daniel would take ?some other visits, then we will sit and evaluate when the visits are complete.?
The 6-foot-10 power forward will visit Oklahoma next weekend, Kentucky on Oct. 10 and return for Late Night in the Phog on Oct. 17.

KU, Kentucky top Orton's list

Kansas and Kentucky are the leaders in the basketball recruiting battle for Daniel Orton.

Orton had listed Kentucky as his leader, but the Bishop McGuinness forward on Monday said Kansas has joined the Wildcats atop his list. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Ohio State are the other programs on Orton's final list.
Orton took an official visit to Kansas last weekend and was on hand as the 2008 NCAA championship team received its rings.
"My favorite part (of the visit) was hanging out with the players,? said Orton, who has no timetable for his decision but will likely announce on one of ESPN's family of networks.
Orton is ranked No. 10 on the ESPN 100, No. 12 on the Scouthoops Top 100 and No. 22 on the Rivals Top 150. He averaged 13.7 points, 11.2 rebounds, 5.2 blocks and 2.8 assists per game as a junior.
The 6-foot-11, 260-pounder has hosted Kentucky's Billy Gillespie, Kansas' Bill Self, Oklahoma's Jeff Capel and Oklahoma State's Travis Ford during in-home visits this month.
Orton said he expects to take an official visit to Kentucky on Oct. 9 and will likely return to Kansas on Oct. 17. Orton has visited Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on multiple occasions and has no plans to make an official visit to either school.
