Cy Ridge's Shepard picks LSU
Top-rated player in state passes on 34 other schools
March 5, 2008, 12:05AM
By BRANDON C. WILLIAMS
Cypress Ridge quarterback Russell Shepard, regarded as the top high school player in the area, announced Monday that he would commit to reigning national champion LSU.
"LSU is a good school and a good fit for me," Shepard told Scout.com. "The recruiting stuff was getting hectic, so I wanted to get it out of the way early so I could focus on my upcoming season. I know LSU is where I want to go."
The 6-2, 185-pound Shepard chose the Tigers over the likes of Texas, Texas A&M, Florida and Michigan, who were among the 35 schools that offered him a scholarship.

Times-Picayune: Highly rated Texas QB says he's going to LSU

Highly rated Texas QB says he's going to LSU
Shepard becomes the Tigers' seventh commitment for 2009
Wednesday, March 05, 2008 By Mike Strom
Staff writer
Highly regarded Texas high school quarterback prospect Russell Shepard will tell you luck had nothing to do with him becoming commitment No. 7 in LSU's 2009 recruiting class.
"It was a gut feeling for me," Shepard said Tuesday in explaining his decision after committing via telephone to LSU Coach Les Miles on Monday night. "(LSU is) an amazing program. Their tradition is outstanding. The way I look at it, the school's not lucky, I'm lucky to be getting a chance to play in a program like theirs."
[...]
"It's just a good opportunity for me," Shepard said of LSU. "They are very (thin) in the depth chart at quarterback. I think I can make an immediate impact. If Ryan Perrilloux is there or not, I still will have an opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact, with him being a (senior) and me being a freshman. I feel like I can come in and (eventually) be the starting quarterback at LSU."
