Two completely different QBs...Nelson was 6-4 and built like a small forward. Payne is 6-7 and built like a TE. Completely different skill sets as well. Nelson threw well on the run and had developed into a Big10-caliber recruit by this point. The jury is still out on Payne and he is more of a pocket passer. Whoever offers Payne at this point is offering purely on potential...he is about as raw as they come as far as a QB is concerned. I hope he makes some significant strides this coming year but right now I don't even know if he is a top 5 QB in Ohio for '09. I can think of 2-3 kids in the '09 class I would rate over him right now...

Film My Take: Honestly, I expected more from this film. The Sophomore hype was legit, but I'm surprised at the lack of mobility and what appears to be an average arm. I love the frame...but other than that, I expected more. However, as a disclaimer, many of the clips show fades and takeoffs...not much to show true arm strength. One thing is for sure, Devontae is huge. Last edited by osugrad21; 03-10-2008 at 02:05 PM. |

Devontae is now the #75 prospect in the country according to Rivals and is rated a 4-star.

...and has an offer from BGSU as of right now.

Yep...just goes to show the validity of early prospect rankings.

I don't post much on football recruiting because I do not consider myself a film expert but I do follow recruiting. It has been many years ago but I used to play in the same league in which Payne is currently playing and that is a terrible football league. I don't see how you can improve yourself by playing against extremely poor talent which he is probably currently doing. I am very surprised that he does not transfer to Glanville where maybe he could play against better competition and perhaps get better coaching. I know nothing about the South coaches so that is nothing against them but Glenville has produced some big-time plays.
It is sort of funny that an Ohio State QB who played in the 60s did come from Cleveland South. |

4/28 Says he has called Ohio State, Indiana & Kansas State. Expects the coaches from Indiana & Kansas State to visit sometime this week. Says he is working on getting his test scores up and getting ready for the upcoming season. |

What do yal think about Devontae Payne? IMO this kid looks really good, on a not so good looking team. (Huge arm Good Accuracy) Reminds me of JerMarcus Russell. I'm hoping the only reason Tres & Co. hasn't offered is b/c his test scores are low as of right now. We could redshirt this guy, polish em up a bit, and have em ready to take over wen Pryor goes pro. |
