What brought this to mind was your mentioning Tyrell Sutton who was my guy a few years back. The OOS guy we took instead was Mo Wells. I know TS did with next to no help at Northwestern. I would loved to have seen spelling Beanie instead of Mo.
This isn't to badmouth Sutton, but I'm not confident he'd have faired any better than Mo Wells. Mr Sutton has done extremely well with much less surrounding talent, but he's also in a scheme that maximizes his ability...something he wouldn't have been in at tOSU.

Back to Studs, I go back to the comment that Grad has now made twice (I believe) about him being a gamer. We all know that's something you cannot coach, and it's something that the great LBs just have. Grad has mentioned that Studlien doesn't have the measurables of some of the others and that's reflected in his current position sans an offer. Question I have is, is this anywhere remotely similar to AJ? We all know the story of how he came in relatively unheralded (outside Ohio) but had the instincts that made him great. (edit, perhaps the reason AJ wasn't heralded may not have been measurables, but the fact that he was injured.) In any event, just curious about such similarities.

Please note, I'm not here to in any way suggest that Studlien is the next Hawk...I'm just asking if that is a similar scenario.

When I think of LB's who played "beyond their measurables", I think of Chris Spielman, not A.J. Hawk, who posted sub-4.5 forties. Spielman was the ultimate "gamer", even though he was (by his own admission) too short and too slow. When Spielman signed with Ohio State in 1984, measurables were not looked at that closely, but 25 years later (yes, it's really been that long), they are a much more important factor in the equation.

Am I saying that Will Studlien is going to be the next Chris Spielman? No, of course not - I wouldn't saddle any high school kid with that burden. But he does seem to have the same kind of work ethic, desire, and toughness that Spielman possessed, and those qualities can still take a kid a long way even in this era when "workout warriors" are so in vogue.

Great discussion first off and second, I agree with most of you. I am all for an offer to Studlien and he is the player I would like to see get an offer the most in Ohio at this point. However, we do have the ability to be very selective in who we pick up at this point, seeing as how we are stacked at LB (unless you subscribe to ESPN ). I doubt we get Ferrell but it appears we have a legit shot at Bell. However, I would love to take that "gamer" to go in between Klein and Whiting. I think the LB corps of Carpenter, Hawk, and Schlegel had two measurably gifted guys (Hawk+Carpenter) to go along with a "gamer" in the middle (Schlegel). In any event, I'm more than content with waiting to see how things play out, regardless if Studlien ends up going to Illinois because of it.

Good comments. And yeah, I think we all like those guys with the lunch-pail work ethic and sometimes we get a bit too anxious to sign-em-up. It's still early unless Will decides he just doesn't want to put off the decision. Sheesh, he's got one more whole season to show tOSU and everyone else what he's got...

Yes, but I'd rather have the opportunity for him to be the next Hawk rather than the next Leman.

While I follow football recruiting I do not consider myself an expert when it comes to evaluating high school talent through video. I rely on the expertise of those individuals who do that for a living or a hobby.

Having said that, with all due respect to Will, and his love for Ohio State if he is not willing to wait for an offer from the Buckeyes (assuming he has not been told different) there will be a number of prospects both in Ohio and out-of-state who have the same potential as Will. If he is not willing to wait for Ohio State and that has been his lifelong dream, I do not understand why everyone is concerned that he might not end up as a Buckeye.

I think the love for Studlien was built up when his highlight tape was released... it was impressive, he's a LB from a lower division school, and he's came out and professed his love for OSU..

09 recruiting hadnt hit full tilt yet, so his story and his "legend" got built up.. However, I think if u look at the big picture, it's evident that while Will may have a passion for OSU that others may not, in terms of on field production and potential there are alot of others who can match him or surpass him..

At this point I think OSU should be in no rush to fill the final 1-2 LB slots.. we have two very good ones in Klein and Whiting.. and if staff wants to spend the rest of the yr putting the full court on Dorian Bell and evaluating other players, i have no issue with that

Because everyone loves a throwback middle linebacker that will hit you in the mouth ala former Buckeye greats.

09 recruiting hadnt hit full tilt yet, so his story and his "legend" got built up.. However, I think if u look at the big picture, it's evident that while Will may have a passion for OSU that others may not, in terms of on field production and potential there are alot of others who can match him or surpass him..

At this point I think OSU should be in no rush to fill the final 1-2 LB slots.. we have two very good ones in Klein and Whiting.. and if staff wants to spend the rest of the yr putting the full court on Dorian Bell and evaluating other players, i have no issue with that
He does look good in the film, but I agree with you 100 per. And, with what LitlBuck says too, about not being willing to wait, etc.
