For prominent programs with large turnouts, the electrifying atmosphere of the crowd and the more relaxed game day setting, can often be the icing on the cake for a prospect on his second or third campus visit. For a top out-of-state prospect on his first visit, the first-hand exposure to what the excitement of a fall home game might emulate can be overpowering enough to commit on the spot.

"It was my first time on campus and the atmosphere was just crazy and unbelievable," said recent OSU pledge Darrell Givens (Indian Head, Md./Lackey). "It was raining, and they still had 76,000 fans there in the Horseshoe screaming."

It is doubtful an eager Givens could have approached Ohio State coach Jim Tressel during a home contest against Michigan. The cornerback, however, certainly found his way to Tressel at halftime of the spring game.

"I had seen enough and knew it was where I wanted to go," Givens said. "I found Coach Tressel at halftime and told him I was ready to commit. We talked and he was excited."

Word from Nike Camp in State College is that he plans to make a public statement about decommitting from tOSU and committing to PSU.

Oh well. There are plenty of other good players to offer his scholarship to. I wish him luck at PSU and hope he gets torched by Thomas, Posey, Stoneburner, etc when we play him

I think I remember a quote saying he had almost committed to Rutgers on the visit. There were also rumors that he almost committed to Miami.

That's why Tressel always encourages kids to look around before committing to Ohio State - it's better never to get a commitment than to get one and then lose it down the road.

I saw this happening from a mile away. Not saying that he ends up at Penn State.... but he defenitly seems to get caught up in the moment. We are pretty deep with DB recruits anyways... so either way, we'll see you in Feb Darrell or best of luck. I wouldn't be surpised to even see him end up at Maryland.

Just happy it happened now.. The way this class is going, losing recruits now isn't a big deal at all because there are others who we can get.. Much better than happening on signing day when we can't recover from it.

I was excited to have Givens because he looks like a stud but we will find others. Hopefully he stays in the B10... I would be worried if I were PSU, he seems easily swept up in the moment.
