Columbus- The worst thing opposing fans can do to Navy's football players isn't to boo them. It's to pity them. Respect? That's the option most Midshipmen prefer.
Ohio State's athletic department is circulating an online video [which is linked at cleveland.com/osu] encouraging Buckeyes fans to welcome the Midshipmen on Sept. 5 like no other OSU opponent has every been welcomed. The idea is for the 105,000 fans inside Ohio Stadium to rise and cheer Navy just like they rise and cheer the Buckeyes.
"Buckeyes know there are some things more important football . . . ," reads part of the text of the video, ". . . service to your country and respecting and appreciating those who serve."
Navy players have felt that before. Chase Burge, Navy's starting junior nose tackle from Rushville, Ohio, has heard opposing fans yell down to Midshipmen warming up on the field: "Thanks for serving our country. Beat Army."
"I was surprised," Burge said. "I thought we'd be just like any other visiting team."
Yet Navy, Army and Air Force can't be just any other team.

Unfortunately I won't be at the Shoe on 9/5 and if I were I would definitely not be booing Navy, but the below quote does give some credence to what the above poster said and for which I'm sure he took a lot of flack. It feels like a game against YSU to me. Lots of OSU fans with admiration or friends/family involved in the military, no bad blood between the schools/fans (unlike some ohio MAC schools), a backstory built around respect for their program (JT vs service), etc.

As long as OSU doesn't come out flat, I see it playing out about like Pitt-Navy 08.

I am not so sure about that. Fair or not fair, most of the fans will be viewing this one as a scrimmage, like most openers. The only time that they get hostile in this kind of game is when the Bucks are underperforming and things are closer then they expect. At that point you get a mixture of fans who get behind the Bucks and fans who instantly start to jab at the coaching.

Word. When OSU lets an Akron or Ohio hang around for 2-1/2 quarters, the stadium only becomes hostile towards OSU coaches named 'Jim.'

I don't know if they'll show it live, but I'd be surprised if they didn't show the flyover and dotting of the i. That's awesome that John Glenn is dotting, that's the first I'd heard that. They showed of replay of Jack dotting the i three years ago against Minnesota, I'm sure they'll do the same for John Glenn.

The Golden Bear's i-dotting was shown on every SportsCenter that night, including top plays and the montage during the lead-in.

If John Glenn gets to dot the 'i', you'll see it.

As a veteran, I am delighted to see that the Buckeyes will be great hosts to Navy.

I just hope that Tress doesn't overdo the respect angle and let these guys stay in the game too long. I'd like to see our guys get lots of reps but see the second string get lots of playing time as well.
