In 1995, the Aggies traveled to Iowa City, Iowa, to face off against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Aggies would let the Hawkeyes jump out to an early 42-0 lead at halftime, before outscoring Iowa, 21-17, in the second half. The Aggies would fall to the Hawkeyes, 59-21.

Does that mean it was a close game by their standards?

That's called putting a positive spin on their points production! I won't try to predict the final score, but it would be great to see 21 points in each quarter of the first half. After that anything goes.

Minnesota's linemen missed out on a trick that could have slowed Ohio State defensive end Thaddeus Gibson. Just before he took off on a pass rush, they could have quizzed, "What do you know about the New Mexico State Aggies?" The brain-teaser might have stopped him in his tracks.
"To be honest with you I mean, I've looked at 'em a little bit," Gibson said later that day.
To be fair to him, the quiz likely would have caused pause for all the Buckeyes, at least until they started focusing in on this week's obscure opponent from the Western Athletic Conference. The noon game in Ohio Stadium will be the first meeting between the schools.
"I'm quite sure they are going to come in here and play a great game," Gibson said.
Not if the recent history of such Big Ten season-interruptus games for the Buckeyes is any indication. Four previous times in the Jim Tressel era, starting with his first season in 2001 when the intersectional match with San Diego State had to be postponed because of the Sept. 11 attack, the Buckeyes have prevailed rather handily against the nonconference foes.

COLUMBUS - It will be 10 o'clock Saturday morning in Las Cruces when the New Mexico State Aggies take the field here in Ohio's capital city to play the Buckeyes.

The locals back home will be gathered at outdoor cafes, gazing at the spell-binding Organ Mountains in the distance, and enjoying fall in the desert southwest as they sip lattes and coffee.

Before 10:30, they might ask for something stronger as the first score updates from the Midwest come in.

With No. 17 Ohio State facing a New Mexico State team that has struggled mightily to win just three games this season, a concoction for trouble is set.

The Aggies have the worst offense in the nation - not just the contiguous 48 states. There are 120 teams in the top class, formerly known as Division I and the Football Bowl Subdivision, and New Mexico State is the caboose in that long train - No. 120 with just 254 yards per game.

Now a 43.5 favorite....how/why was this game even scheduled? How does scheduling an opponent like this contribute in any way to this football program? Seems like a lose-lose situation to me.

What if they don't cover the spread?
What if a key player(s) get hurt?
What if this causes a let-down/lose our "edge" for
next weeks game against PSU?

I'd rather have them on the schedule than a bye week.

#1 It gives our guys someone other than ourselves to hit while working on improving for the tough November we have coming up, yet still affords us the chance to rest those players who may need to get healthy for the stretch run too.

#2 It's Ohio State Football! I'll take it any time, anywhere, against anyone over a bye.

As much as I like watching the Buckeyes, an extra week to get ready for PSU would be ok with me.

I think playing 'game speed' on Saturday is a better way to get ready for State Penn than a Bye week...

After Purdue, do you really think that would happen?
