What to watch for on offense: A running game. The ground attack was barely along for the ride under Hal Mumme with just a few carries here and there. That?ll change right away under Mike Locksley and the new coaching staff with a slew of quick, tough backs ready to work behind a big offensive line that has to learn how to hit someone.

What to watch for on defense: The linebackers. The Aggies have a lot of undersized players across the defensive board with smallish ends, corners just barely around six feet, and linebackers built like safeties. However, they can run. Jason Scott is one of the team?s better players to work around, but he'll need help with star hitter Nick Paden out for the year with a knee problem.

I don't think there was confusion about the team, but CFN did misidentify the new NM St coach in the 'What to watch for on offense' section. They did correctly name Walker in the second quoted section, which came from the full Preview.

It's a consequence of the national economy, of course.

"It's a decision we had to make with regard to our meals," first-year coach DeWayne Walker said Thursday. "There are a lot of other areas where we have to make tough choices with how we're going to spend our money."

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Calling all New Mexico State fans. Your team has the munchies and you can help.

In a twist on Little League moms lining up after-game treats, New Mexico State's budget-conscious football staff distributed an e-mail this week asking fans to donate after-practice or late-night snacks for hungry players.

It's a consequence of the national economy, of course.

"It's a decision we had to make with regard to our meals," first-year coach DeWayne Walker said Thursday. "There are a lot of other areas where we have to make tough choices with how we're going to spend our money."
Athletic director McKinley Boston said regents directed him to trim $1.5 million from the department's budget, dropping the overall operations figure to about $17 million for the current academic year.

"Obviously, I passed some of that on to all of our athletic programs, including football," Boston said.

That was the bad news. The good news for Walker and his players has been the community's response. The memo went out after the first day of practice, and six donors wasted no time before they ponied up.

We're not talking about Cheetos here.

"It's good stuff like trail mix or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches," linebacker Jamar Cotton said. "We had a guy bring in a bunch of watermelons. That was great. The team was excited. It was like little kids getting lollypops."

The snacks might seem like a luxury to outsiders but players say they're helpful during preseason two-a-days, when the temperature is high and the demanding practices seem endless.

If CFN's unit rankings are any indication, the Aggies are going to wish they'd spent Halloween in Athens instead of Columbus. I mean, if you're going to travel that far to get hammered, you might as well do it at a big party.

According to CFN, NMSU has:

• The Worst Defensive Line in the nation

Their highest unit ranking is for the Defensive Secondary, which comes in at number 111.

Edit: I just figured out why we're paying them. Having them come out pays their athletic budget (munchies included) for a year.

I think this game is such a big waste of time in the middle of the year. We'll probably go pretty deep into the line-up, but I'd hate to lose anyone to any type of injury that late in the season for a meaningless game.

Just goes to show how large the discrepancy is between the FBS haves and the FBS have-nots.

The noon start on Trick or Treat night is great news for us dads of little ones. I hate when life makes you chose between being a good parent and Buckeye Football. I keep telling myself that its a good thing he's a boy- He may cry now, but he'll understand when he's a dad why I was such a neglectful parent.
