Boys hoops: Plymouth rolls to district title game
With 6-foot-7 center Jacob Furr and do-it-all point guard Brook Turson leading the way, the Big Red opened a 22-8 lead after the first quarter.


Less than three weeks ago, St. Paul (16-7) upset Plymouth 44-43 in Norwalk. Furr and Turson scored 40 of Plymouth's 43 points in the loss. Wednesday, Plymouth's dynamic duo combined for 39 points. This time, however, they had plenty of help. Cory Brown and Alex Mowry each scored nine points, while Cody Smith added eight.

"That's a testament to the hard work those guys do," said Brook Turson, who had 25 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists. "They put up some big offensive numbers for us. The credit goes to them."

Big numbers again for Brook. Plymouth will play Sandusky St Mary's Friday at 7pm in Willard. That should be a really good HS basketball game. Plymouth needs all their kids to contribute in this one.

Basketball: Mansfield Senior star earns top northwest district honor

Plymouth coach Brad Turson shared the Division IV coach of the year award with New Knoxville's Dan Hegemier and Defiance Ayersville's Marv Retcher.

Turson led the Big Red to a 17-3 record, the best regular-season mark in school history, and a runner-up finish in the Firelands Conference.
Plymouth plays Sandusky St. Mary's for the D-IV district title tonight at Willard.

Turson's son, sophomore Brook Turson, was a first-team pick in Division IV. The younger Turson led north central Ohio in scoring (21.6), rebounding (10.5), assists (6.8) and steals (3.2).

Plymouth pockets second district crown in 3 years

Turson picked up his fourth foul just 14 seconds into the fourth quarter, forcing his father and coach to lift the sophomore point guard. St. Mary's took advantage immediately, cutting Plymouth's lead to 45-35 and forcing the elder Turson to roll the dice and reinsert his son with 6:43 to play.
The ploy worked to perfection, as Brook Turson diced the St. Mary's press and never picked up his fifth foul.
"Brook is such a tremendous player and he's just a sophomore," St. Mary's coach Scott Ruthsatz said. "What impresses me most about him is his basketball IQ. He can beat you physically with his jump shot and his ability to handle and pass the ball, but what I value more than anything is his basketball intelligence.

Plymouth advances to regional tournament

Brook Turson has to be on the court if Plymouth is to be successful.

The sophomore son of Big Red coach Brad Turson was forced to the bench with four fouls early in the final quarter Friday in his team’s Division IV district final game at against Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic at Willard High School.
Two unsuccessful attempts at getting the ball down court against a Panther press and Turson was back on the floor helping his team to finish the deal, a 63-43 win.“Sometimes Brook does not listen to his dad,” Plymouth coach Brad Turson said talking about the reaching-in foul that followed two player control fouls on the 6-foot-3 standout against SMCC. “He was warned not to get that fourth, but I guess he thought he could get away with the reach.

“We have faith and confidence in our kids to play without him but it certainly looks easier when he is in there.”

Boys regional hoops preview: Plymouth super sophomore playing beyond his years

Turson, who will lead Plymouth (20-3) into tonight's regional semifinals against Van Buren (19-4) at Bowling Green State University's Anderson Arena, stormed onto the north central Ohio basketball scene last winter. He averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.7 steals a game as a freshman and was selected the Firelands Conference Player of the Year.


This year, he led north central Ohio in scoring (21.6), rebounds (10.5), assists (6.8) and steals (3.2). He scored a single-game school record 51 points in a 68-67 win over St. Peter's and had three triple-doubles during the regular season.
In two district tournament games last week, he had a combined 46 points, 29 rebounds and 15 assists.

"He can get around anybody," said 6-7 senior center Jacob Furr, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. "You can tell he's been in the gym since he was 3 years old."

"His basketball IQ is so high," St. Mary's coach Scott Ruthsatz said. "He can beat you physically with his jump shot and his ability to handle and pass the ball, but his basketball IQ alone can beat teams.

Big Red stopped by Sweet 16 loss

With 6-foot-7 senior center Jacob Furr and 6-2 sophomore point guard Brook Turson combining for 1-for-12 from the field in the first half, the Big Red were in trouble.

Turson, the area's leading scorer, missed his first 11 shots and finished a hard-luck 3-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-11 from the line. He finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Bad night for Brook and the Big Red. Shell Shocked!! They have nothing to hang their heads about. Good year for them. I can't wait to see what Brook can do in the next 2 years. Plymouth sophomore Brook Turson makes Division IV second team

PLYMOUTH -- He was the Firelands Conference Player of the Year as a freshman and the leading vote-getter on the District 6 Division IV team as a sophomore. Now Plymouth's Brook Turson can add All-Ohioan to his already impressive r?sum?.
"It's a great honor individually, but I think it is a team award," said Turson, who led north central Ohio in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals while leading Plymouth to a district title and berth in the regional tournament. "The (statistics) don't mean anything if the team isn't successful."
He plays for Columbus-based Team C-Biz along with Nick Kellogg, the son of former Ohio State great Clark Kellogg.
"He really plays a high level of competition (in AAU)," Brad Turson said. "I don't think there's any doubt it ... helped him during the high school season."

The thing in that article that is most telling is about the minor surgery he had on his left pinky toe after the season. He played all year with pain in it and had a secondary infection from a cut he received earlier in the year to it (was told it was not staph which is good). He never let the coaches know he was in pain or even talked about it til after the season, when the pain made it hard for him to even stand up. The numbers he put up were great and he wasn't even close to 100% this year. I think you'll see his numbers increase next year as Plymouth will look to push it up the court more and get out and run.

This summer should be an interesting one for him. He's always played very well in AAU and I think that will pay off this summer more than any. He's always been pass-first but I think he will look to score more and that could help as well. The 16U CBIZ is one of the better 16U teams in probably the nation. They are really well coached and have some very good players.

I have some of Brook Turson's stats from the Rebok Summer championship in Las Vegas. Team CBiz finished at 6-2 for the tournament. Not a bad showing. He was also playing on a bum ankle, that he hurt the weekend prior, from what I hear. He averaged 9.4 points in 8 games. Again, with Brook, he makes his team better when he's on the floor.

Strengths: Turson welcomes back seven lettermen and four starters from a team that advanced to the Sweet 16, including his All-Ohio son, Brook. The younger Turson averaged 21.4 points, 10.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists a game last year. Plymouth is deep, athletic and experienced.
Brook Turson is a Division I prospect who, barring injury, will score his 1,000th career point early this season.
