'10 OH PF Adreian Payne (Michigan State Verbal)

Payne is supposedly tight with UD commit Staten and current Flyers Chris Wright and Josh Benson who also played at Dayton area schools.

Maybe he would like to make some new friends like in Columbus, Ohio. I don't put a whole lot of weight on where some recruits are going to school even though they are very close. Every situation is a little bit different. There is more than just going to school to play basketball... at least I certainly hope there is. There are the academics, community, and just giving away from home.

Adreian is a different kind of kid, very quiet and unassuming... Sometimes he's so laid back that it affects his play on the court... But when he's motivated, there aren't many in the class better...
It is not a stretch at all to believe that he would select Dayton over tOSU... Knowing the kind of kid he is, he isn't concerned with big-time programs and NBA credentials... He knows he's good enough no matter... And with Chris Wright on board, there will be scouts at UD in the future for him and Juwan to get noticed...
I don't think Adreian is a lean anywhere at this point, but I'd say the chances of him going anywhere but Dayton, tOSU, or WVU (darkhorse here) are remote... He does have a good bond with Staten and the other young Dayton area players, and he has frequented UD open gyms (gets rides with Wright and Staten)... His grandmother really wants him to stay home to play, and he is close with her... Gregory (who isn't going anywhere unless it is MSU, book that) was able to sell the program to top-tier athletes like Wright, Paul Williams, Josh Benson, and Juwan Staten who were all being pursued by bigger BCS schools... He shouldn't be discounted in this one either, as he is a pretty well liked figure in the Dayton area and he is really selling Adreian hard about taking the Flyers to the next level... Should be a fun recruitment to watch...

Have heard some people call him a center? any truth in that description? does he project out there?

I have read where he is a pretty good defensive player because of his length and athleticism. With his height, I could see him defending the post very easily and I don't think you want him too faraway from the basket on offense. I think there are other guys will probably have other opinions than mine but that's how I see it from what I have read.

Well Payne plays the C position on the AAU team as Sullinger has the ability to step outside the paint...I think he has the body to really develop into a PF, but right now his skills are more for the C position...

AP is working on his game and has been getting better out to 18'... He's likely going to be around 7' when done growing, and he has a long wingspan... He likely won't have the bulk of a true 5-man, but that is where he likely ends up in college... He will terrorize other 5-men with his athletic ability though...

I just don't buy the "Gregory would only leave for MSU" line as Izzo doesn't appear to be going anywhere soon and the lure of a bigger stepping stone program will get to him. He may be getting some talent, but Day is just not a national name and it might be a while before he could transform it - will he be that patient - doubt it.

Payne could be one of those who'd rather be a bigger fish in a smaller pond and stay closer to home and family and friends. I hope he wants more, like national title contention, but some don't like the limelite as much as others.

Gregory could bounce but I don't think he'd have the team to make the run to get a could offer without Payne

He turned down Depaul, so he won't take a BCS job just to have one. I think he would leave Dayton but it's not going to be the Oregon State, Penn State, Nortwestern jobs that he'll go to.

As a Flyer fan, I don't understand all this talk of Gregory leaving. In my opinion, he's more likely to be canned then offered bigger, better coaching positions.

In his 5 years with the program his records have been:

2003-04 24-9 (NCAA First Round)
2004-05 18-11
2005-06 14-17
2006-07 19-12
2007-08 23-11 (NIT Quarterfinals)

The 03-04 was a loaded (by A-10 standards), senior-laden team that had been the NCAA tournament the previous year. After 03-04, the cupboard was completely bare, and BG has pretty much had to build the program from scratch. But the results haven't exactly been enthralling. Good recruiter, mediocre at developing talent, and a mediocre X and O coach. The next two years will be telling. What he's capable of accomplishing without the best player the Flyers have seen in a decade, Roberts, should tell what kind of coach he really is.

In my opinion, most Flyer fans would prefer BG to stick around, but if he were to leave, there'd be no worry about folks jumping from Kettering Tower.

And to tie this all back into Payne, it's more likely a losing season, or two, get BG shown the door, than being cherry-picked by a BCS school.

As a Flyer fan, I don't understand all this talk of Gregory leaving.

I think there might be one or two people posting about Gregory leaving but the majority only say he will only leave for one job and that is at Michigan State. None of the other guys think he is going anyplace.

With Sibert, Staten and Sullinger doing most of the dirty work, the team's most intriguing player and possible best overall prospect is probably Adreian Payne. The 6-foot-9 forward runs like a deer, jumps like a wide receiver and runs like a track star (which apparently he is).

Payne may not scored much (8 points) or dominate the glass (7 rebounds) but his four made buckets were certainly eyebrow raisers and his rebounds sent a message that he isn't messing around. Payne is about as pure as a prospect as you'll find in 2010 and when it all comes together, watch out. Think Darrell Arthur.

Staten's comments about Gregory were what started the discussions of how likely he was to move on. I think his record is decent as he has been rebuilding the program.

Anyone know why Sullinger would be lobbying Hairston more to join him here than Payne? Is it just because they are "friends" or is there some other reason?
