I want Payne BADLY, but my instinct tells me he and Jared will not team up here much if he does come. I think Payne's true contribution would come in the 2012/2013 season after all the other bigs are gone. He sounds like he'll take a bit of seasoning at this level - a la Ken Johnson.

Let's just hope it comes to fruition.

I think you must remember he is only entering his junior year of high school and with this length, size, and God-given physical attributes I think he will be able to contribute as soon as he steps on campus. Now, I am not saying that he plays a full 40 minutes but I don't think that Sullinger will be playing a full 40 minutes either. He will get plenty of playing time in his freshman year for someone just coming out of high school IMO. I will grant you that his bigger contribution will come in the following years when he gets more playing time because he does not have a one and done it in front of him unless they're both on the court at the same time in his freshman year.

Thanks, that's great to hear! Not to forget about other guys like Orton, but he should be far and away priority number one and I'm glad to hear that's the case.

Orton is not coming here...

I see Payne as kinda like a DLaud type player with a little more offensive game...They are both 6'8'' 6'9'' guys with long wingspans and very good defensive players...They will both be 5 type guys, and Payne would see time his frosh season, but like Litlbuck said he would not be counted on dearly that season which is not always a bad thing, as it means we have lots of depth...

I also feel he is somewhere in the middle between KJ and DLaud. Both were very raw coming out of h.s. as well. KJ was on some teams with very little inside talent so he started and played a lot early despite his lack of production and having to learn-on-the-job. He was an offensive 5th option after-thought until his 5th year ( SR ). I think Payne and DLaud could progress faster but I also think both have/had much more talent around and in front of them at C.

So I see Payne as KJ level talent and skills but in a situation like DLaud of having to be patient and wait his turn here. But as already stated that is a good thing as he needs some development and seasoning as raw as he is.

I think his future is at C here and he'll have Dlaud and Zisis AND Jared all on the roster his frosh season and possibly two of them still here his Soph year. PATIENCE, will be a key for him. We'll need him BAD his JR year!!! I also think DLaud will come into his own his JR here after playing a significant backup role this coming season ( 15-16 min a game ).

Our biggest recruiters at this point are Sibert and Sullinger..............let them get in his ear and combine the full court press by the staff.........I like our chances of getting a verbal.........he is a quiet kid, not sure we will hear anything until he has made a decision.......latest updated stated he is wide open but I do not believe that, I think it is a battle between Ohio State and the local cincy schools.

he was a 7-8 pt player his first three playing years, he shot the ball over .615 from the field in 3 of his 4 years, the least amounts of mins averaged per game was 26.5 while dragging down 5 boards a game. if you score more than 200 pts not bad, not bad, he did that every year he played. but he did vastly improve but he wasnt lackiing as much as most seem to recall...

jo4h,
KJ averaged about 7 pts and 5 rbs over his first 3 seasons. For a guy starting at C, and playing that many minutes, his pts and rbs were pretty pedestrian those years. Not bad, but not impressive or high calibre IMO! IMO, the rb avg is very average and the scoring is slightly below average for a starting C. He really was the 5th option on offense as most of his FGs were on the break or garbage inside - they didn't run many plays thru him until his SR year.

His forte' was blocking shots and an occasional dunk on the break or put-back inside, PERIOD. He only showed all-around capabilities as a SR where he averaged 12.5 pts and around 7.3 rbs. Those #s are more what you'd expect from a starting C playing that much.

I don't have his individual stats before his JR year ( only some totals ) but his last two years he shot 55% and 58% FGs ( his best year % wise ) so I think you have your 61.5% confused as his career % is 54% and his best ( .578 ) doesn't rank in OSU's all-time T10.

Now his b/s numbers were always SUPERLATIVE and thru the roof, but that is only ONE STAT! I liked KJ, but for a 4 year starting C he really didn't stand out that much except as a s/b, where he stood out PLENTY. His averages for everything else are well down the all-time tOSU lists! The 54% career FG, where he is tied with Jason Singleton at 8th all-time, is his only other mark of note. Good player and good 5-year kid, but I think many overstate his all-around proficiency remembering how great a s/b he was.

Good player and good 5-year kid, but I think many overstate his all-around proficiency remembering how great a s/b he was.
not to hijack paynes thread but

1-he wasnt a 5 year player. he was a prop 48. at that time non qualifers could still enroll. so he wasnt a redshirted player. that has to be taken into consideration.

2-was he johnny minor, jimmy hull, robin freeman, gary bradds or jim jackson, no. but he certainly was not doug etzler, rick yudt or don jantonio...

ken johnson was a two time team mvp. all b10 center, two time b10 offensive player of the week. started 3 years 99, 00, 01. 1,055 career points.

ken is 7th all time in fg % .540
9th rebounding 739 (no season in the top 10) [he actually only lead the team in rebounding twice, redd did the other two times]
444 blocked shots is #1, seasons he has 1,2 and 4. (oden is 3), he has his name all over shots blocked in a game. look at his annual numbers and lock everywhere else, its a joke...
4th all time in games played.
3rd all time in games started

his teams were (full non vacated games)
8-22
1-1 (27-9)
11-3 (24-7)
0-0 (20-11)

97-98 30 79 45 203 6.8
98-99 36 98 35 231 6.4
99-00 30 94 47 235 7.8
00-01 31 145 96 386 12.5
career 127 416 223 1055 8.3

(thats g, fgm, ftm, pts, avg)

i think you make valid points but a few things

1-basketball isnt baseball, its not all about the stats. ken johnson was a space eater. offense, defense, tranisiton. he allowed redd and penn to create on the perm and singleton/reese etc space to operate.
2-while i mostly agree with you not to the extent you are verbalizing. and certainly not to the extent that many seem to remember, his role is vastly understated.

Why I mentioned his AVERAGES not being up there is that compared to many of the greats in our history, he played and started FOUR SEASONS to three for many of them - and his hi # games also inflates the totals over others. Thus his career totals are relatively inflated vs many while his averages are NOT, and don't compare. 8 pts? 6 rbs? okay, but not that impressive for a 4 year starter. Superstar shot blocker, not that special in any other way. BTW, I think they have a mistake as Funderburke's .541 should rank him ahead of KJ thus why I said he and Singleton are tied for 8th all time.

Mysterious Payne Is Final Piece To 2010 Puzzle..............Rapp theorizes that Payne is at the top of the board for Matta and staff. Comments by Sullinger and Sibert. Payne is very quiet and does not indicate which direction his recruitment is going according to Sullinger and Payne. They are talking to him about Ohio State and he is the only target left in the 2010 class at this point.
