Clevbuck could go either way
I might be alone in this thinking but I really don't like the arm tackles. He doesn't seem to run through the target. It almost seems like he leaps early and relies on his reach to get the job done.

That can definitely be corrected though. Just an observation on my part.

If OSU isn't the destination, then I hope Sparty lands him.

William Gholston - College Football Recruiting 2010 - ESPN

Quote:
Gholston is a physically impressive prospect. He is a tall kid with solid bulk and really stands out on the football field from an appearance standpoint. He possesses the frame to also keep packing on good bulk. While he quickly catches your eye with his appearance he is not too shabby as a player either. He is a versatile kid and plays mainly linebacker at the high school level. Despite how tall he is he plays the position well. He is active with his hands and locates the ball well. As a blitzer he times up well and can quickly accelerate through a seam. While we could see him being allowed to play some from a two-point and used in certain situations like a linebacker, the truly best fit for him is at defensive end. He has an ideal frame and with his reach and athletic ability could be a very good player at the end position in college. Like mentioned he is active with his hands. He will need to adjust to engaging blockers more quickly coming off the ball from a three-point, but he displays the ability to shoot his weapons and separate at linebacker and should have no trouble doing that as an end. He works to keep good pad level when taking on blockers, but can get a little high with his build and coming off the ball from a stance should help him to better manage his pad level and make it tougher for blockers to get into him. He runs well and can chase plays in backside pursuit. Can have a bit of a methodical style to his play, but has a good motor and gets around the football. He is a solid tackler, though he can get a little sloppy at times when he tries to arm tackle. Though at times with his reach he can reel in and make some tough tackles many others could probably not. He could be a handful as a pass rusher and this is where we could see him being allowed to stand-up some and rush from a two-point. As he develops pass rush moves and learns to fully utilize his reach he could be tough to stop. Plus if he gets his hands up he can be a tough target to throw over. Gholston is a versatile and athletic prospect. He could also be looked at as a tight end. Ultimately we feel defensive end is his best fit and while he needs to keep fine tuning his game, he is a very good prospect. A drawback could be a desire to be a two-sport player in college. If he pursues basketball it could hinder development time and make it harder for him to keep on needed bulk. Still worth it either way, but playing two sports could rob him a little of some on-field potential.
To answer the question, I have no idea why OSU hasn't offered. They obviously have Moore and Durham as potential DEs (and possibly Baldwin) and must rate them higher for their scheme than Gholston.

From the film I've seen, Moore shows the most promise at TE/FB. As of last football season, he was a much more gifted blocker than he was a block-shedder. Athletically, I see him at a middle ground between Brandon Smith and Kevin Koger, with the potential to play TE, FB or DE.

Durham does not have overly impressive speed, but he has very good acceleration and is an exceptional block-shedder. If I had to guess, I would say that he ends up playing a role similar to the one Nathan Williams currently plays. Williams is slightly bigger and faster, but Durham gets off blocks better.

As for Gholston, he has great size, good quickness and a good sense of the game from a LB's position. He's articulate in interviews and seems to desire constant progression as an athlete. He hits hard and makes the extra effort to get the tackle. Despite the concerns over his height, I'd be willing to bet he could play MLB, SLB, SSDE, Viper/LEO or TE at OSU and do a fine job. I share a similar sentiment with wad regarding his lack of an OSU offer---it is astounding. I would love to see what Gholston could do for Ohio State.

Could the lack of offer be a matter of the staff knowing that he's all MSU and don't want to throw out an offer as a matter of respect for the kids that they will offer and have interest in tOSU? With limited offers to give this year, why throw one out when you run the risk of making a kid you really want feel like a second choice?

Just a thought...

Well, you are wrong. We have offered guys like Kyle McCarthy, Mike Zordich, Justin Boren, Devon Kennard and Dre Kirkpatrick last year etc. and we would be scared of offering Vernon's cousin?

edit: Also read first couple of pages of this thread.

Top DE Gholston close to narrowing list

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

One of the top prospects in the Midwest, defensive end William Gholston (Detroit, Mich./Southeastern), has 14 scholarship offers. His list includes Michigan, Michigan State, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Alabama, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Notre Dame and Oregon.

"I'm also looking at a few schools that haven't offered yet like Clemson, Ohio State and USC," Gholston said.

Gholston may soon tighten that list.

"In the next two weeks I think I'll try to narrow it down to seven," Gholston said. "I know some of them are going to be Michigan, Michigan State, Miami, Florida, and maybe Alabama and Notre Dame."

Gholston is on the Southeastern basketball team which has made it to the Sweet 16 in the state basketball tournament. Because of his basketball schedule Gholston hasn't visited any schools recently. Once basketball is over he plans to change that.

"I know I want to go to Alabama and Miami for spring games," Gholston said. "And I'd like to go to Michigan's and Michigan State's spring games."

The 6-foot-7 and 237-pound Gholston made 102 tackles including 15 sacks during his junior season. Gholston made 108 tackles including 19 sacks during his sophomore season at Detroit Mumford.
