By A Trieu. Mathis holds offers from Cincinnati and Miami, and says that he is 90-95% sure he will commit to the Hurricanes on Sept. 1st. Miami has told him that he will play as a freshman, and that they want him to give an early verbal. He is also interested in Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida.

The team the Badgers faced on Saturday, the Michigan Wolverines hosted a number of recruits for the game. The list included five star defensive tackle William Campbell (Detroit Cass Tech) and several top juniors, including Campbell's teammate Dior Mathis. Mathis, who has had Miami-FL in the lead for quite some time, enjoyed the game enough to say that the maize and blue are very much in his mind.

"I'm feeling some pressure now. After this game, I said, man, this is going to be hard. I want to wait for some new schools though, USC has been contacting me. They're sending me letters."

Defensive back Dior Mathis is one of the top class of 2010 prospects in the state of Michigan. The 5-foot-9 and 170-pound Mathis, who has run the 100-meter dash in 10.47 seconds, reports scholarship offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Miami, Oregon and Tennessee. Mathis attended a couple games at Michigan and one at Michigan State.

Detroit Cass Tech has long held a reputation as one of the most talent-rich football pipelines in the state. So consistent is the school's production that many college coaches stop in religiously every year.

Technicians head coach Thomas Wilcher loses William Campbell, Teric Jones and Thomas Gordon from his 2008 playoff team, but his cupboard isn't bare. His 2009 club will also feature a few major Division I prospects, headlined by 5-foot-8, 170-pound cornerback Dior Mathis.

Mathis was known more for his standout track performances his first two years in high school, but that changed in a hurry during his junior season. He had a breakout campaign on the gridiron, grabbing an impressive eight interceptions and also moonlighting as a big-play threat on offense.

"He's one of the top five to six juniors in the state and I think he could move a tad higher with a good senior season," said Scout.com Midwest analyst Allen Trieu. "His main asset is his sprinter's speed, but he also has very good footwork and the type of fluid hips which are vital for a top cornerback. Despite his lack of great size, he still comes up and puts his hands on receivers. I also love his feisty, competitive attitude. The one area of improvement I see with him is run support."

After seeing the way Greg Reid performed in the Under Armour game, I have really grown to not care about a CBs height as much as I used to. Obviously, Greg Reid was a VERY good corner with trememndous coverage skills, so not every 5'9" corner will have that. However, if they can jump and have a long wingspan that definitely helps. Not sure what those numbers exactly are for Mathis, but he DOES have speed to burn.

Players like Mathis and Lamarcus Joyner do not "bother" me as much at CB as they probably would have a few months ago, becuase they weren't the "typical" 6-foot-1 180lb pound "Tressel cornerback." These two players have shown GREAT ability and right now would have to be at the TOP of my CB list if I had to give you one.

With regard to Dior, I've seen some say that while he isn't as thick as Cissoko, he has better hips and excellent recovery speed (10.4m in the hundy).



Should be a solid college CB at a minimum.

Good point. I seem to remember that Frank Minniefield wasn't a tall corner (5'9") and he had a stellar career with the Browns. The same with his sidekick, Hanford Dixon (5'11"). Height isn't everything.

small pint-sized corners are a liability when they go up against 6'4" - 6'5" WRs in the alley-oop pass in the end zone. Even T. Pryor outjumped a Texas DB in the end zone in the Fiesta Bowl.

Even T. Pryor? You mean even one of the best athletes in college football outjumped a DB? Shocking. Given a well thrown ball, a 6'4" - 6'5" WR will win out over almost any DB in the end zone.

Evaluation

Mathis may have some of the better ball skills and athleticism in this cornerback class. A very quick, fluid perimeter defender with a knack for coming up with the big play. His lack of height is his biggest detriment but he's high-cut and has longer limbs for his short frame. Very fluid pedal and opens and turns very smoothly in coverage. Has great footwork. Can stop-start on a dime mirroring in off-man and flip his hips fluidly when transitioning to run vertically. Body control adjusting to the ball in the air is excellent. Does a great job anticipating the pass and shows outstanding reactive athleticism. Flashes great recovery burst and closes the cushion very quickly undercutting the pass. Understands underneath zone concepts and jumping the correct route. Comfortable around the football and turns into a receiver on the jump ball, often masks his lack of height. Does appear a bit quicker than fast but has good top-end and makeup speed. However, he can get caught peaking in the backfield in man coverages and is susceptible to the double move. Can let get turned, let receivers separate and will have a more difficult at the next level recovering when beat deep. We like his aggressiveness as a bump and run press guy but he will need to improve his upper-body strength as he struggles at times maintaining inside leverage versus bigger receivers. Run support skills are not a strong area. That said, Mathis has the physical tools, skill-set and natural savvy at the corner position to develop into a great lockdown cover guy at the college level. Great prospect and potential stud on special teams as well.
