The Nittany Lions have not stopped recruiting ESPNU 150 Watch List wide receiver Kyle Prater from Hillside (Ill.) Proviso West. But unless something dramatic happens, Prater won't be playing college football for Joe Paterno.

"Penn State has offered," Prater said. "But I don't see them too much in the picture right now."

Baltimore (Md.) City College wide receiver Adrian Coxson, another ESPNU Watch List prospect, committed to Penn State in April, which factors into Prater's thinking.

Trust me, it's okay. Duane Long, for all his football knowledge, does not have a mastery of written English. I don't know if it's the use of commas (or lack there of) or what, but jeeeez, Duane should hire a ghostwriter. I'm no Communications major, but somethings you have to read twice to comprehend.

I'm with Dwayne here...Williams is just so smooth. I love Prater too and I would take either, but I think both are top 75-150 nationally. Not to mention we get the home state guy in Williams. In any event, my guess is we take on big guy at WR and one smaller speedy guy. Looks like the big guy will be Williams...might be too late on Prater anyways.

Putting the full-court press on Prater

ESPNU 150 Watch List wide receiver Kyle Prater (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West) was seen at times on Saturday talking to ESPNU 150 Watch List quarterback and Illinois commitment Chandler Whitmer (Downers Grove, Ill./South). Whitmer said he would love to see Prater join him in the Fighting Illini's 2010 recruiting class and was making his pitch to the star receiver. Defensive back Corey Cooper (Maywood, Ill./Proviso East), who won the camp MVP award for the defensive backs, has also committed to Illinois though he continues to look at other schools. Cooper and Prater are good friends and hung out together a little on Saturday. There is talk of moving Prater to quarterback his senior season, or at least to play him at that position at times. The goal is to get the ball in Prater's hands as much as possible and let him make plays. Whether or not he moves to quarterback will not impact his recruiting one bit. He will almost certainly line up out wide at the next level.

Prater came in very highly-regarded as one of the nation's top wideout prospects and arguably the top player in Illinois and did nothing to tarnish that image Saturday. Blessed with a long, graceful stride and tremendous frame, Prater was a tough cover all day long and caught everything cleanly with his hands. Did very well against press coverage and was a tough cover in the red area with his length. Not a great route-runner yet, but has all the tools to be a great weapon at the next level.

Wide receiver Kyle Prater (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West) looks the part of a big-timer. He is on the brink of being one of the top skilled athletes in the country. Prater is smooth and fluid in his routes and absolutely towers over the secondary -- standing 6-5. Prater can separate from defensive backs with his quickness and speed. He snags the football out of the air with his long arms and big, soft hands. It was no surprise that Prater made several acrobatic, reach-back receptions during the camp.

ESPNU 150 Watch List wide receiver Kyle Prater (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West) has approximately three dozen scholarship offers. However, in July he said he had trimmed his list down to six schools, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC, Illinois, Alabama and Notre Dame.

As the calendar has turned to August, Prater says he has scheduled one official visit and plans to soon schedule one or two others.

"I've got one Sept. 5 at USC," Prater said. "I'm trying to get the other ones set up. I'll definitely take one to Tennessee. I'm trying to get one set up to Oklahoma."

The 6-foot-6 and 195-pound Prater caught 60 passes for 948 yards during his junior season. He averaged 15.8 yards per reception and had nine touchdowns.

Prater has visited four of the six schools he is still considering. USC and Alabama are the only ones he has not been to yet. But that has not hurt the Trojans chances.

When asked who his favorite is, Prater said, "I really like USC right now. I like Illinois and Oklahoma too."

Prater plans to graduate early so he wants to select a college sooner rather than later.

"I'd like to have my college by the middle of the football season," Prater said

Kyle Prater (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West) informed ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com that he will make his decision on Sept. 2nd.

Prater previously named a top six of Notre Dame, USC, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama and Oklahoma.

The nation's No. 8-rated wide receiver recently returned from a visit with the Trojans who appear to be in the lead. Oklahoma and Illinois are two others in his top group that stand out.

The buzz: He didn't wow us during the Rise Games: Gridiron Kings at Disney a few weeks back, but we won't hold that against the Proviso West kid who at 6-5, 205 practically mirrors what Randy Moss looked like coming out of high school. Like everybody on this list, Prater has offers galore, but he placed Illinois, USC, Alabama and Oklahoma at the top.

The skinny: Prater is ranked as the No. 1 recruit at his position by Rivals.com. Prater?s speed and pass-catching abilities are unmatched by any high school recruit in Illinois. Imagine what he could have accomplished by playing with a quarterback of, say, Goro?s abilities. Prater averaged more than 15 yards per catch last season, and you can expect that and more this season for Proviso West, which lost seven of nine games last season. Prater was used at receiver and quarterback during summer passing jamborees, so just watching him in a number of offensive roles will be a delight this fall.
