Florida cornerback sets official visit with Michigan
By JOSH HELMHOLDT ? FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER ? July 7, 2009
July is a transition time in the world of college football recruiting. The camp scene, for the most part, has come to an end and elite high school football prospects, as well as college coaching staffs, are beginning to get serious about their upcoming seasons. July is the month when the offseason wraps up and preparations for the season ahead begin, and that includes the setting of official visits.
Official visits differ from all other recruiting trips in that the host school can provide transportation and accommodations to recruits visiting their campus. The NCAA allows five of these types of visits for each recruit, as long as they are taken to five different member institutions.
One of the first to set an official visit to Michigan is Hollywood (Fla.) Hills three-star cornerback Tony Grimes. The 6-0, 170-pound Grimes reported this weekend that he will be making that official visit to Ann Arbor the weekend of Sept. 11, to coincide with the Wolverines? home matchup with Notre Dame.
?I was going to wait until the Ohio State game, but it is too far out in the season,? Grimes said. ?[The Michigan coaches] said there?s no better experience than to look up and see 110,000 fans cheering you on.?
Grimes had previously visited Michigan in May when the Wolverines hosted a barbecue in the Big House for recruits, but he is looking forward to seeing Michigan Stadium at full capacity on game day. Grimes is also looking to take official visits to Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss before making a decision toward the end of his senior season.
