College coaches have been flocking to Paterson, N.J., for the past two weeks to check up on jumbo athlete T.J. Clemmings of Paterson Catholic. The raw, 6-foot-6, 260-pounder is a tremendous athlete who, up until this past season, played basketball exclusively.

He gave football a try this year and has quickly developed into a wanted man for schools that recruit the Garden State. Coaches love his upside and his high character.

In recent weeks, coaches from Notre Dame, Miami (Fla.), Florida, Penn State, Pitt, Ohio State, South Carolina, Maryland, Michigan State and others have come through the school.

"There are a lot of coaches coming in and a lot of coaches coming in at once," he said. "This whole process has been great. I just have to thank my high school coaches for pushing me and continuing to push me."

His ability to play basketball (he broke a backboard playing that sport earlier in his high school career) has translated to the gridiron.

"It pretty much has helped me learn how to move," he said. "I can move on the court, and now I can move on the field."

Clemmings says that he will definitely take unofficial visits to Maryland and Pittsburgh this summer. The Terps and Panthers were among the earliest schools to offer. He is not concerned about distance from home at this point and trips to more schools (possibly down South or out West) are possible, depending on who offers.

Pittsburgh Football Recruiting 2010 - ESPN

Pittsburgh has landed highly-recruited T. J. Clemmings of Paterson Catholic (Paterson, N.J.) for the Class of 2010.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound defensive end also holds scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Miami-Florida, Penn State, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Michigan, Maryland, Ohio State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse and Duke, among many others.

Clemmings, also a standout basketball player, registered 20 tackles for loss and seven sacks last fall.

The Panthers now have four commitments.

Paterson Catholic defensive lineman Trevor "T.J." Clemmings is not committed to Pitt, according to PC head coach Benjie Wimberly.

"He went out there and made a hasty decision [to commit] without any input from his parents or me," Wimberly said Monday night. "He's going to rethink it and continue the recruiting process."

Don't count us out QUITE yet. He is still open and one of his HS asst coaches thinks it comes down to us and Florida after he take officials. Clemmings appears likely to take official visits to Ohio State, Florida and Maryland.

He's still open, and Michigan is pushing for him hard. There's been rumblings of Ohio State still staying in contact with mutual interest, as well as Boston College. AT the very least, this race isn't over, but this is going to require a Mine That Bird type of comeback (for those horse racing watchers out there).

Trevor Clemmings thought he would win State championships in basketball when he transferred from Paramus Catholic to Paterson Catholic during his freshman year.

Despite little experience, Trevor Clemmings rates as one of country?s top 50 defensive ends.

The Teaneck resident never even expected to play football, forget becoming a coveted defensive lineman who largely was responsible for the undefeated Cougars completing a three-peat by winning another Non-Public, Group 1 championship last month.

The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Clemmings couldn?t be blocked at times for perhaps the most dominant defense in North Jersey, a unit that yielded just 41 points in 11 games.

Clemmings, the North Jersey Defensive Player of the Year, drew at least double teams on every play, which permitted teammates to make more tackles, sack quarterbacks and cause turnovers.

"T.J. created havoc," Paterson Catholic coach Benjie Wimberly said. "People were just so worried about him; it allowed everybody else on our defense to do a lot more things. T.J. definitely was a major reason we only gave up 41 points."

Clemmings, also a power forward for Paterson Catholic?s highly regarded basketball team, just is happy he found football before his junior year. "Everything happened at the right time. I guess football is ultimately what I was supposed to do. I?m just glad everything worked out for the best."

A projected end at the collegiate level, he has received Division I-A scholarship offers from more than 30 schools. He is visiting Pittsburgh this weekend. He visited Rutgers last weekend and has a visit to Ohio State tentatively scheduled for early January.

Pitt is right fit for Clemmings

Trevor Clemmings had to be sure.

That's why the Paterson Catholic defensive end reconsidered after making a verbal commitment to a Pittsburgh assistant coach in late June. Clemmings realized he had to take at least one official visit and examine other options before choosing a college.

But after visiting Pittsburgh last weekend with his parents, Trevor Sr. and Fay, Clemmings determined his initial instincts were correct. The Teaneck resident has informed Pitt assistant coach Jeff Hafley that he'll play for the Panthers next season.

"When I went there [last] summer I felt that I was at home," said Clemmings, who was named North Jersey Defensive Player of the Year last week. "I felt, automatically, that I was part of the program already. But after talking to my parents, they wanted me to have something to compare Pitt to. That's what I did."

The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Clemmings picked Pittsburgh over Rutgers and Ohio State.

He made an official visit to Rutgers the weekend before his trip to Pittsburgh. He had considered taking an official visit to Ohio State in early January.
