There's not much they can really do about it except play a tougher non-conference schedule...which could be an option. It's not like they are gonna stop playing their own conference opponents just cause the conference has been a little down during the past few years. If USC loses a game I do think they should be out of the national championship pending other teams having one loss or less, but I don't think one loss should put them out of the BCS picture. Even if their schedule isn't all that difficult, it's not easy to go undefeated for a season at all
