Slaughter displays skills in Peach win

By Phillip Ramati TELEGRAPH STAFF WRITER

<!-- begin body-content --> FORSYTH - A Middle Tennessee State scout at Peach County's game at Mary Persons on Friday shook his head after the Trojans' Chris Slaughter opened the scoring with a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown.
"I can see why (Slaughter) is going to Auburn," the scout said, half in admiration of Slaughter's skill, half in disappointment that his school had no shot at the senior.
The scout hadn't seen anything yet.
Slaughter followed with touchdown catches of 31, 53 and 51 yards and picked off a Bulldogs pass with just one hand. And that was all before halftime.
It proved to be a long night for Mary Persons, which fell 31-14 as Peach County (2-3, 2-0 4-AAA) stayed perfect in region play.
"I think we're maturing and growing," Trojans coach Rance Gillespie said. "There are a lot of areas we are starting to mature in. ... Playing good teams early helped us. (The win) is huge. We're playing a quality football program with a great coaching staff. Coming here and winning is huge for the program."
The Bulldogs (4-2, 1-1) were ineffective trying to move the ball for much of the first half. Punting it away after a three-and-out on their second series, the Bulldogs kicked the ball to Slaughter, who faked a reverse at midfield and broke free down the left sideline for a touchdown to give Peach County a 7-0 lead with 6:06 left in the first quarter.
The Trojans also struggled offensively in the opening period, but got on track in the second quarter. Quarterback Antonio Henton needed just three plays before hooking up with Slaughter on a 31-yard touchdown strike with 9:56 remaining in the half.
After another three-and-out from Mary Persons, Henton used three more plays before finding a wide-open Slaughter for a 53-yard hookup with 6:57 left in the half to make it 21-0.
On the ensuing series, Mary Persons started to drive under the direction of backup quarterback Marcus Walton.
But on third-and-eight inside Peach territory, Walton threw up a pass which Slaughter reached up and grabbed with one hand at the 10-yard line, returning it 24 yards before being forced out of bounds.
Four plays later, Slaughter snatched Henton's pass out of the hands of a Bulldog defender for a 51-yard touchdown with 2:30 to go.
Mary Persons finally mounted a solid drive just before halftime. Starting quarterback Caleb Wilds returned to fuel a seven-play drive that was capped by his 20-yard scoring toss to Phillip Edwards that made it 28-7 with 43.3 seconds to go in the half.
In the second half, the Trojans elected to control the clock. They used 7:27 to record a 14-play drive that was capped by Juan Rodriguez's 26-yard field goal to make it 31-7.
Slaughter finished the night with four catches for 156 yards and three touchdowns receiving.
"This is a huge loss for us as far as the region standings go," Mary Persons coach Steve Chafin said. "We've got a lot to learn to beat a good football team. ... We had great individual efforts on the field; just collectively as a team, we have to put forth a better effort against a quality opponent."
