Peach shows they are battling back

The Trojans (2-3, 2-0 in 4-AAA) showed they should still be the team to beat in the region with a 31-14 win over Mary Persons on Friday.
"It's huge," Trojans coach Rance Gillespie said. "(Mary Persons) is a quality football program. They have a great coaching staff. To come (to Forsyth) is a huge win for our program."
Peach County got off to a slow start because of injuries to quarterback Antonio Henton. But with the senior back at close to full strength, the Trojans showed what they could do offensively against the Bulldogs.
In the first half, Chris Slaughter got Peach on the board with a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown. Henton and Slaughter then hooked up on touchdown passes of 31, 53 and 51 yards to stake the Trojans to a 28-7 halftime lead.
Slaughter, who also had a spectacular one-handed interception in the half, was obviously pleased to have his old running mate back.
"Whooo," Slaughter said, shaking his head when asked about Henton's comeback. "He told before the game he was like 85 percent. He showed he was 100 percent."
Slaughter finished the game with four catches for 156 yards, as well as the punt return touchdown and the interception.
"He's good enough to play in college now," Mary Persons coach Steve Chafin said of the Auburn-bound Slaughter. "They've got a lot of good ballplayers on that team."
The Trojans elected to control the clock in the second half, keeping the ball on the ground nearly the entire time. Tailback Mareo Howarrd finished the game with 26 carries for 108 yards, while Henton ran 10 times for 45.
Peach County mounted a 14-play drive that took up the first 7:27 of the third quarter, capped by Juan Rodriguez's 26-yard field goal to make it 31-7 with 4:27 left in the period. The Bulldogs were unable to catch up, scoring a late touchdown with 1:21 left in regulation.
The Trojans can take a giant step toward clinching the region if they can beat Washington County this Friday. The Golden Hawks fell to 1-1 in 4-AAA after a 28-27 upset by Perry, which improved to 1-1.
