for athletic scholarships, the GPA is considered as a function of relativity to the rest of the high school class... what that means is that the admissions group is looking for an individual who 'must' be in the top 50% of his class... so if the school just hands out grades and everyone in the school gets A's and B's (the school is merely pushing everyone thru) then the GPA is 'discounted' ... If the school is scholastically a high powered school (maybe a prep school) the athlete could be hampered since the school could be stacked with gifted kids..
always intriguing to see a kid with a "3.0 GPA" who scores a 600 SAT... makes you wonder... but also explains why the GPA is looked at in relation to the whole class...
