Family: Injured Ohio State player able to move arms
April 29, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State walk-on Tyson Gentry, who seriously injured his neck during spring practice, is able to move his arms and shows other signs of improvement, his parents said Friday in a statement.
Bob and Gloria Gentry, releasing the first details of their son's condition since the April 14 neck injury, did not clarify whether Gentry was partially paralyzed. Ohio State spokesman Steve Snapp said he did not have information on whether Gentry could move his legs.
Gentry has gone through two neck operations at Ohio State University Medical Center. This week he was moved to a rehabilitation program.
"Ty is able to move his arms and there are some other signs that are encouraging," his parents said. "But we know this is a long, difficult recovery process."
The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Gentry, a sophomore from Sandusky, played both punter and wide receiver. He landed awkwardly after what players described as a routine tackle in practice.
