That is a big problem but not always entirely true. Particularly when Conley was with
OSU and talking to Kurelic the media (or at least one of them) knew what was really going on. Recruiting rags and web sites are not obligated to report an offer because a kid says so and if in doubt there is usually someone they can check with to get a nod or a wink - but not a quote.
IMO where the trouble often comes is when the staff is trying to keep kids on the back burner and therefore need to let what is really a potential offer stand in the mind of the recruit. It is when such a kid decides to publicly commit that things get sticky. If the kid is adamant about the offer the media has to play along.
