The two high profile examples I can think of:
1. Charlie Ward - Florida State - won the Heisman (enough said).
2. Ronald Curry - North Carolina - failed to live up to expecations in either sport. He was the top rated player coming out of high school in football and basketball by some publications, but it's hard to say that basketball lessened his effectiveness in football--look at his teammate Julius Peppers. Also, he's now (a WR) in the NFL, so it's not like he was awful.
I think the right athlete could do it and succeed. And anyway, who is to say that Pryor wouldn't switch solely to Football as he matures and sees that as his meal ticket. Ted Ginn, Jr. was pretty serious about running track at
OSU, and I think he may have his freshman year, but he isn't anymore.
