Troy Smith is one play away from being the starting quarterback in one of the premier programs in the nation.
The list of QBs who have spent four or five years at major programs and rarely or never started goes on and on. Ron Macejewski (who I believe had a cup of coffee in the NFL) is a classic example. Troy is something of an exception because he has the talent to play other positions - but
OSU is not deep enough at QB to let him move. Other than that the comments I have heard from Troy have been pure class in terms of the way he is handling the situation and the way he feels he is being treated.
But the original question asked how I would feel if I were Troy Smith. For starters I would have given the issue careful thought when I considered accepting a scholarship at a school that had already recruited one of the top QBs in the nation. In making that decision I for one would certainly have considered what might happen if I lost that battle and known in advance what my plans were. So during the third year of my career there would be no decision to make.
Finally, those who are saying he would have only one year of eligibility left if he transfered to a 1A program are correct. That said, as early as next year (with Boeckman having a year of practice under his belt) and certainly in two years (with Schoenhoft on board) Smith could move to another position if that is what he and the coaches wanted.
