It seems pretty clear from the news reports and radio shows I've been hearing that TS IS in violation of NCAA regulations.
Bruce Hooley was just on 1460 saying that the
OSU staff has know about this situation for almost a month now. Anyone think that they would still need to be investigating this issue if:
1) TS received written permission from the AD or Head Coach?
2) TS did NOT miss a class?
This is a pretty minor issue, one that would be VERY quickly cleared up if TS has followed proper proceedure. NO WAY it takes a month for
OSU to investigate this if everything is AOK.
Hooley characterized the
OSU staff as "very upset" that Troy did NOT seek their permission before attending the camp. Their main worry (originally) was any improper benefits that TS might have received while attending the camp. Now their concern is how the NCAA will view his participation without permission and the possibility that he missed class. Doesn't sound like improper benefits are part of the equation. Hooley also said that his sources (inside
OSU) are telling him they do NOT expect TS to receive any more suspensions from the NCAA. What will happen from the
OSU staff? Who knows.
All of this is very frustrating for us as fans, but let's keep our cool. In the grand scheme of things this is barely a bump on the road. If it weren't for the "death by a thousand paper cuts" we've endured the past several years no one would give this a second thought. I do understand the angst as well. We are very proud of our team and school, and take exception to the fact that our QB (and traditional "team leaders") is making poor decisions. Hopefully we can keep our emotions tempered until football season finally arrives.
