After being redshirted as a freshman and then sharing the quarterback position with Cory Randolph for the next two seasons, Ben Mauk finally had achieved his goal of becoming the starting quarterback at Wake Forest.
There would be no more sharing of the job. He was the man now, leading the Demon Deacons against Syracuse in their 2006 season opener at home in Winston-Salem, N.C., and playing with a calm confidence that his coaches hadn't seen before.
It was the culmination of a long maturation process for the kid who had been a star at Kenton High School in Northwestern Ohio, where he won two Division IV state championships and set national records for completions (1,105), attempts (1,931) and yards (17,534).
