Glenville High School football coach Ted Ginn Sr. was breathing a lot easier Sunday morning after talking to his standout senior, Freddie Lenix.
The 6-0, 195-pound Lenix was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital after he collapsed in the north end zone of Falcon Stadium shortly after the Tarblooders' 29-21 Division I, Region 1 quarterfinal victory over Austintown-Fitch Saturday evening.
"Freddie was hit from behind, by I don't know who, at the end of game and had his legs go numb," Ginn said. "The numbness went away, so he played the last couple of downs."
When the team knelt for its postgame prayer, the numbness came back and Lenix collapsed. He was placed on backboard and stretcher and taken in an ambulance to the hospital.
Lenix, rated one of the nation's top linebackers, was held for observation Saturday night while tests were performed.
"Freddie's got a bruised back," Ginn said. "And he's got full motion and feeling in both legs."
Will Lenix play in Saturday's regional semifinal game against St. Edward?
"Oh yeah, he'll play," Ginn said.
