Lexie Spurlock didn't quite betray Charlie Weis' big secret. But the Morgan Park football coach -- who is in almost daily contact with Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones -- said Thursday that he believes his former star player will get the start for the Irish in the season opener Saturday against Georgia Tech.
Weis has refused to name a starter publicly because he thinks that will give him an advantage over the Yellow Jackets. Asked if Jones has told him anything, Spurlock said: ''All I can say is Chicago will be proud.''
''Everyone tells me that he's been getting most of the snaps, so I'd assume that we'll all be happy,'' said Spurlock, who said he spoke with Jones on Wednesday night and again Thursday.
Jones, a sophomore who didn't take a snap last year, has been competing with junior Evan Sharpley and freshman Jimmy Clausen.
''He had a good camp in the spring and the summer,'' Spurlock said. ''[Jones] has all the tools, and he is with the man who can polish them up. The sky's the limit.''
