About a minute remained in Wisconsin's game Saturday when coach Bret Bielema found himself standing next to an official on the sideline during a timeout. The official was staring at the scoreboard in Camp Randall Stadium. Bielema had other things on his mind.
"Aha! Appalachian State got 'em," the official said to Bielema.
"What?" Bielema said.
He spoke for millions.
Appalachian State's upset of Michigan is believed to be the first win in college football history by a championship subdivision (formerly I-AA) team over a ranked opponent. Michigan entered the game No. 5, but the loss dropped it out of the Associated Press Top 25. Appalachian State is the two-time defending I-AA champion.
"We were very much like, I'm sure, the Wolverines themselves and the Michigan faithful were -- (in) disbelief," Purdue coach Joe Tiller said of his reaction as he and his team watched the first half before preparing to take on Toledo.
