I agree with BuckNutty. Some whacked out stuff goes on with the rep system. If it does stay, maybe Clarity can change it so that only the reputation you earned on a particular forum is displayed when you post on that forum.
Say your total rep score is 1000
You've earned 750 in the Football forum
You've earned 50 in the Basketball forum
You've earned 200 in the Political forum
The system would only display the number of gems that coincides with your rep score for that forum. And you can only affect other members by that amount of reputation in each corresponding forum. So in the above example, you couldn't affect anyones rep in the recruiting forum.
Another point folks have touched on is the ability to give partial rep points. Some folks I'd like to send a positive rep, but don't want to give them 7-8 gems for simply a nice (but not great) post. Same for negative points.

It really bothers me that so many people start threads to complain about dings or write Clarity to do so. Are people's egos seriously THAT fragile? By allowing reps to be disabled, Clarity killed any opportunity for people to cry about their reputation. No matter how bad your rep is, you can always go back to a single onyx chiclet.
I really like the rep system. But if it really causes Clarity that much trouble, I could live without it. I think people are still going whine when they flame and get jumped all over. From what I hear, it is C and the Mods that are really doubting the effectiveness of the system...That really makes me wonder if it is hurting other areas of the board. I don't want the petty fighting to upset a great site.
My official vote is to do what is best for the board. We have some great mods that, together with Clarity, know what would be best for the site.

I agree with the different levels of reps. Maybe eliminate the comment field altogether and make 6 radio buttons. 3 levels of positive rep and 3 levels of negative rep. And of course, auto-signing would be a great idea. I like the idea of it taking much longer to max out. It seems like half of the board has the graphic display maxed out even though their rep points are different. I think that the reps should come back though. It is just one more little thing that sets this site apart from the others.

Ebay does it - is it possible for the Planet to open up rep so other posters can see what's going on with everyone else? We don't have to see everything - just the last ten received or so. If the rep system is truly supposed to indicate what the rest of the community thinks of each poster, then I think we should have a qualitative reference, not just a quantitative one.

And I would like to think our guys understand that, but there's only one demonstration of understanding that and that's at 12:00 noon on Saturday.

I am not going to read through everyones posts here but so far the common theme seems to be appending the posters handle to the rep. I am all for that, I like having the rep system but I would vote for the different levels of repdom and appending the name to rep given.

I think this idea is worthy of further discussion. Why not be able to only award positive jewels? I personally would much rather be able to blast people with a red ruby (at least when they deserve it), but after 3yards sees the stuff that idiots write in some of those dings, and they're obviously causing problems. Along with changing how much "weight" a certain award can give, why not eliminate the negative dings altogether? I mean, face it, no matter how much we change this system, there are still going to be assmunches like LHM that are going to abuse it. And there are still going to be crybaby whiner-whimps like NDChief (sorry chief, but it's true.....or at least it was ) that cry about a negative rep every time they're given one. I love the red rubies, and appreciate the purpose they serve, but it seems to me like they're causing more harm than good. Maybe the solution is to modify and improve the positive rep system, so that people can still "earn" their reputation, but eliminate the dings altogether. We have enough "self-police" here that nobody is going to get too out of control....and if they do, they'll just retire and come back with a different moniker. Right, Alan?
Seriously, I think the best solution may be to eliminate the red rubies. We could probably tie the warning system into this, so that anyone that gets warned by the mod's automatically takes a hit on their rep. as well. That way really classless posts directly effect the user's rep, but petty little bastards can't effect anybody else's.

I think you need the comment field or else you won't know why the person gave you rep. I like to know what people like or don't like. IMO auto-signing would fix most of the problems.
