Seeing the number of offers Matta has out for 2009, and seeing that there's a few of those prospects who don't seem to be listing
OSU in their top group, I thought I'd take a look back at recruiting since TM arrived and see where he's pulled guys from.
Starting with the Oden-Conley class (2005):
Indiana -- Greg Oden, Mike Conley
Ohio -- Daequan Cook, David Lighty
North Carolina/Florida (juco) -- Othello Hunter
Then our current class (2006):
Ohio -- Kosta Koufos, Jon Diebler, Dallas Lauderdale
Illinois -- Evan Turner
North Carolina/Virginia (prep) -- Eric Wallace
Minnesota/Texas (juco) -- P.J. Hill
For 2008:
Ohio -- B.J. Mullins, William Buford
Michigan -- Anthony Crater
Indiana -- Walter Offutt
For 2010:
Ohio -- Jared Sullinger, Cameron Wright
Georgia -- Trae Golden
The conclusion is -- each of Matta's classes has been built around a core of players from Ohio, plus a player or two from IN, MI or IL. The only reaches distance-wise have been the Juco guys, plus Wallace and Golden.
A significant part of that is not needing to travel. Ohio and Indiana have been stocked with serious talent the past two years, and when you throw in some reach to the Detroit and Chicago metro areas, there's a lot of guys you can go after.
For 2009, Matta is extending his range. There are NO offers to players from Ohio, which is probably why that class is a little slower to form than what we've seen so far in other years. The IN-MI-IL tristate only has two: Riley and Van Treese. The rest of it looks like: Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, California, New Jersey, Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, and Wisconsin. Truly national recruiting indeed.
Looking at the '10 offers, Matta is back to the OH-IN formula, with offers to Howard and Thomas, in addition to Hairston from VA.
