madsen is a practice player, a big body. that hopefully at some point can be a big body of the bench in a pinch. hell graduate and stay out of trouble.

wright is supposedly similar to lighty? looks to be a 4 year role player, with an increasing role? correct?

Yep....I compare his game more to Turner, in that he fills the stat sheet with Assts, pts, and rbs, but I think his path of how he will contribute in terms of how quickly I liken to Lighty...

Every top program needs a Madsen........a Hill.........a Lighty.......to go along with a Conley.....Oden......Koufos...........it is a fine line.

First, the staff probably didn't feel Madsen would be a Madsen - so we'll have to see how Zisis pans out. With so little to project with ( at UAB ) it is hard to guess how good he will be. How good will Wallace be at DPL? Kind of a similar crap shoot ( just different positions and skillsets ).

Second, I wouldn't lump Lighty in with Hill and Madsen IN ANY WAY. Lighty was a national T35 recruit who played 16.3 min as a true frosh on a national runner-up team and 32 min as a Soph every-game starter. Madsen played less than 2 min per avg in all games as a 3rd yr Soph and Hill just over 4 min ( at a dire need position he was the only backup at ) as a Soph. Hill and Madsen HOPE to rise to the ranks of role players in the rotation - probably toward the bottom if they do crack it - this year ( JR ) or next (SR ), and may or may not make it ( could be career non-rotation players ).

Lighty is far more than a role player and has NBA potential.

Just because Lighty will likely be a four year player doesn't diminish his PT and production. I'm sure the staff would be thrilled if Cam earns that much PT that early in his career. More frosh, like Wright, will probably follow a path much more like Lauderdale of playing a little as a frosh ( 5-10 min ) and maybe more as a Soph ( 13-18 ) before being potential starters as upperclassmen. Sibert and Smith may also have to be patient as we should have some upperclassmen ahead of them their frosh year that may be very hard to supplant.

We FINALLY have a full roster and are developing some experience and upperclassmen for the next few seasons. It will take a lot of skill and talent for frosh to see a lot of PT on our future rosters. I for one WELCOME THAT! It is what the elite programs have. The superstar 1&d level talent like Sullinger and Thomas will get their early shots but most frosh will have to sit and learn and be patient. Not a bad thing at all for the program in general.

Lighty is far more than a role player and has NBA potential

I think you misinterpret the word "role" when describing Lighty. David does a lot of good things very well but he is not really a go to guy when it comes down to the guy you want taking the last shot. Last year, the ball would have been in the hands of Butler or KK and possibly even Turner instead of David. I think you know would have had the ball in the last couple minutes of a game the season before.

I would be very surprised if Lighty plays in the NBA. I think he is good enough to play over in Europe but would really need to step it up as far as his outside shooting would go in order to play in the NBA. That is just my opinion.

To be clear, I am not indicating I feel Lighty is a mere role player by mentioning Madsen and Hill in the same sentence, just trying to make a point that you need role players and then four year players to go along with your one and done players.

Wright will have more depth to overcome than Lighty did when he came in, that is not a fair comparison in my opinion.

Seems like everyone's definition of "role player" is different, I just don't tend to call a 32 min/gm starter like Lighty a role player. I guess I kind of look at it as starters, 6th man, role players ( rest of the rotation ) and then bench jockeys. I prefer not to have to go JUCO or xfer and have the frosh and slow developers be your role and bench players. I don't think you need to sign players that have little chance to make the rotation to fill out those positions. You want them filled by guys like Dallas last year and Offutt this year and possibly Cam in '10-'11. Guys with real potential that just may not be ready as frosh or even Sophs.

I'm not so sure Cam will face that much more in front of him than Lighty did. Lighty had SR Lewis at 3 and JR Butler at 2(mostly) and FR Cook as a much more heralded wing to beat out for PT. Cam will have SR Diebler at wing and JR Offutt some at 2 and maybe JR Buford if he isn't gone and then fellow frosh Sibert and Smith. Maybe more bodies but possibly less experience and talent if Buford is gone - about the same if he is still here. But Cam is not as highly regarded at present, so I'd guess the expectations for him will be less.

I agree, but I do not think the staff hands out scholies like candy.......If you are indicating Zisis has little chance to be a productive player.......well I think it is a little early to close the book on him..........I will say this............he was just one of two european players invited to play in the high profile Michael Jordan game...........UAB was just not a good fit.............give him some time.

I will stand by my earlier post...........Cam will be fighting for time with Turner (barring early entry), Buford, Diebler, Smith, Offutt, Sibert and Thomas..........a few more players than Cook, Lewis and Butler.

I am not indicating Zisis has little chance, just that he was taken at a time and in a situation that has produced little or nothing in the past. I don't discount that he MAY BE GOOD, but it is "less likely" than I'd like - based on past similar signings.

That is why you try for history to not repeat itself...I have been told they don't feel this situation is anything like Madsen situation and I am not ready to give up on PJ Hill yet...

id say he fits a role on the team. defense, rebounding and chip in some points. i doubt hell ever be the man. nothing wrong with that. youre not going to carve out a game plan for lighty. hes a heck of a ball player. but he plays a role. nba wise, i dont know. its so hard to tell. but, if a kid works hard and stays out of trouble lets be frank their are some not so spectacular 9,10, 11th men in the nba. but they are reliable and consistent. i have no idea howd hed project to the next level. very very solid college player though.

Based on that kind of interpretation of "role player", then EVERYONE that ever played is a role player. I just think that makes the term moot. I think of a role player as a guy 7-11 ( depending on how deep you go ) on the rotation chart that comes in for situational subbing. 3 shooting, rebounding, defense, etc. Like this year we'll see Dallas for rebounding, Diebs for 3 shooting - maybe Simmons for 3's if he doesn't start, Kec for outside shooting at the 4, possibly Offutt for defense, etc. Lighty was a role player as a frosh as he came in to play D on the wing, for example. I don't see describing a starter's best attributes and defining his "role" with the team as the same as classifying him as a "role player". That doesn't make sense to me as it is too broad and vague!

youve got your top 2-3 guys

the next group 3-6ish that you do things for in game, run sets for but dont cater your team/style around

depth guys 7-11ish who provide depth and things you metnioned

org depth-practice type players etc.
