Kudos to UK if they can actually best OSU in something lately. Their current recruiting class my be a little higher ranked than OSU's '06 class, but then again, in '06 OSU was putting on a clinic on fall Saturdays. UK was not. So let's watch this new Coach Cal class make a run at the Title game, and win 12 games on the grid, and then I guess they got us at that point.

On another topic regarding Kentucky basketball, they currently have 16 players on their roster or who are committed for next year and this does not include Jody Meeks who is testing the waters regarding the NBA draft. I guess some of these kids want to play for Kentucky so bad they're willing to pay their own way... I guess.

Not exactly anything earth-shattering in terms of the three players that Kentucky disclosed wouldn't be returning to the program.

Jared Carter was a seldom-used senior who could have tried for a fifth-year, Donald Williams didn't play a minute last season and A.J. Stewart was considered history - and barely played for Billy Gillispie as a sophomore this past season.

That gives Kentucky 14 players on scholarship - not counting Jodie Meeks, who has declared for the NBA Draft, but has not hired an agent.

Does it really matter whether John Calipari runs off Kevin Galloway, Matt Pilgrim or Josh Harrellson at the end of the day? The only way these guys get in the game is when the Wildcats are blowing teams out next season.

Well, yes, it probably matters to Kevin, Matt, and Josh. But who cares about them, right?

The above post was brought from the Aaron Craft and a response from Bulls-Eye pretty much summed up what I was going to say about the fact that Matta must have had some discussion with Lighty and Turner regarding their futures after this season not to mention the possibility of one or two guys transferring.

I think one thing to remember is the fact that we are not a lock to get Payne or J. D. but the chances of the latter are very good IMO. The former I have no idea and neither do many other people.

However, you do bring up a very good point in that we cannot sign more than 13 players on scholarship which means we cannot over sign guys to LOI's. I have no idea how they will get around that 13 number before this coming November. However, I do know that Kentucky had 16 players, possibly 17, committed or on scholarship as recently as last week so there must be a way of getting around this type of situation before the letters are signed. I guess Thad could always ask a guy to wait until the spring before they signed a letter. However, I don't know if that would be a good thing.

Perhaps, one of the football recruiting experts could jump in here and explain how a coach might have 14-15 to guys signed and sealed before the late signing period. Maybe there is a way a person can be moved off of scholarship. When it comes to that, I really have no idea.

If there is scholarship room on the football team, putting Dave Lighty on a gridiron schollie would remove a "counter" from the hoop squad. But that is a pretty extreme solution.

I do not think there you can put a recruit on a scholarship for a major sport such as football without it counting against the basketball total. The reverse would also apply. I believe that changes if a player would be a scholarship for a major sport and play a "nonrevenue" sport.

I was under the impression that the recruit would only count against one sport, the higher-revenue sport, no matter how many sports he actually played. So in this instance, since football is a higher revenue sport than basketball, he would count only against the football scholarship limit.

I do not think there you can put a recruit on a scholarship for a major sport such as football without it counting against the basketball total. The reverse would also apply. I believe that changes if a player would be a scholarship for a major sport and play a "nonrevenue" sport.

Could be wrong, but my recollection is that there was an order of precedence between football and basketball with football counting first. I am pretty certain that two sport players don't take up two ships.

In any case, I would be disappointed if OSU pulled such a stunt.

Thanks. I stand corrected and like you would be very disappointed if Ohio State did that. I don't think this Athletic Department would do but some other schools might. I have never heard of a guy being taken off of one sport to make a scholarship available for that sport.

This is correct; however, I agree with Oh8ch that this would be a pretty lousy stunt.

Not really sure what you're getting at with regards to football recruiting. As far as I know there is no difference between oversigning in basketball or football. You can sign more players than you have scholarships available but you must be down to the alotted number by the time those scholarships take effect. Players do not count against the number at the time the letter is signed. For instance most of this years basketball class will sign their letters in the fall of '09 but they will not count against the limit until they enroll and begin receiving aid. Matta could sign an extra player or two as long as there is an open spot for them by Fall of 2010.
