By Greg Jones

High school sports editor

TIPTON ? Class 2A No. 3 Bishop Luers had to work harder than it expected for its first regional title.
It took overtime and a school-record 48 points and 17 of 19 from the free-throw line from DeShaun Thomas for the Knights to outlast upset-minded Northfield 94-81 in overtime Saturday in the championship game of the Class 3A Tipton Regional.
Luers (22-3) advances to play No. 2 Westview (24-1) in the semistate Saturday.

His game is beginning to remind me of former Buckeye JJ Sullinger. Both lefties with some height and extreme athleticism. They both carry a very wide base in the post and like pull up jumpers where they can rise up over defenders. The outside game is there, but they do there best down low on turnarounds, spins, and put backs. DeShaun has better handles and will be a better outside shooter by the time he gets on campus.

48 pts (34 in 2nd half and overtime)
15/25 fg, 17-19 FTs

Leurs wins their Regional and heads to Semi-state 94-81 in OT.

Just curious is he forcing shots at times, and is he getting his teammates involved?

Definitely not LeBron in that aspect.

It's not like he plays a one-man game where he's totally blocking out his teammates, but on the other hand he certainly isn't out there distributing "dimes." He's not a bad teammate by any means, but he takes some bad shots, often out of frustration.

Young player, so it's something to add to his game.

Yeah that is what I was getting at in terms of adding it to his game...Just have never seen him live, and was just wondering about that part of his game...If he could develop a passing game to go along with his already outstanding post game and midrange game, and pass out of the double teams he would become that much more dangerous...

He'll be a power wing player with some versatility. It'd be nice if he could implement some more passing in his game. He does well using his height to see over double/triple teams and kicking it out when he's in the post, but when he gets going towards the rim, it's to shoot, no matter the people around him. At the college level he's going to have to learn to get the ball back out after driving and drawing the big guys.

maybe not though, he is already 6'7" probably 225 and only 16 years old so going up against the bigs may not be a problem.

He has the size and athleticism to be a great point forward, but has to become more of a creator/facilitator to take that role...He very well could end up 6'9'' 245 by the time he gets to college, and he could play anywhere on the floor in terms of out or in, but would be a huge mismatch for other teams, much like Jeff Green of Georgetown has been the past couple years for them...That is really a guy that he reminds me of in terms of body size, shooting ability, etc...But obviously not his passing ability, and once he improves that ability, he is going to be very good...

BTW I think prep school would be a very good route for Deshaun as he is playing in a smaller level school in Indiana so he is not facing good competition night in and night out, and is seeing defenses that he won't ever see in college in terms of the triple teams and what not...

I think you have to remember that he is only a sophomore in high school and a premium basketball player already. I would think that he takes unwise shots probably because he thinks his shots have a better chance of falling then do his teammates. That is only natural of a young kid who is so talented. As you get older and play with guys who were just as good as you the dimension of being able to distribute the ball becomes a lot easier because you have confidence in your teammates. That would be also a benefit of him going to prep school... playing with better players in addition to playing against.
